How would you like to reduce that hour a day of exercise to 20 minutes, whether you’re a kid, teenager or adult? Well, according to a study published in The Journal of Physiology, you can do just that by doing interval training exercise. To do this, you alternate high intensity training with a lower level of exercise.
As an example, if you are on a stationary bike, you’d pedal at the highest intensity you can do for a minute and then pedal slowly for a minute. At 20 minutes – STOP YOU’RE DONE! The researchers found that the men in the study received the same benefits as they would have had they exercised at a lower intensity for an hour or more.
A separate study of women found that those who exercised for 20 minutes, alternating 8 seconds of sprinting on a bike with 12 seconds of light pedaling, 3 times a week for 15 weeks, lost three times as much fat as the women who exercised at a regular pace for 40 minutes.
