Getting Angry Can Reduce Your Stress

angrystressThere’s new information about getting angry. It used to be thought that getting angry was unhealthy and would cause stress for women.

A study published in Biological Psychiatry looked at the effect of facial expressions of emotions, such as fear and indignation, on our stress response. They found that displaying anger may cause your brain to release less of the stress hormone cortisol.

The study focused on short-term anger and frustration, such as getting cut off in traffic, not long-term anger. The researchers believe that responding to this kind of anger gives the person a feeling of control over those little things that get to you by counteracting feelings of helplessness and frustration.

So, an occasional #XY!!XZ, might actually be good for women, too.

Cutting Back On Teachers – Seeing The Outcome

The High Cost of Low Teacher Salaries…

teacher2I don’t usually include politically oriented blurbs in The Teplitz Email report, however, this one may have a long-term affect on the health of teachers and students.

Just listen to the amount of stress that teachers have coming at them.

The quote below was written by Harriet Vines, Ph.D., Age Smart Associates.

“After being interviewed by the school administration, the prospective teacher said:

'Let me see if I've got this right. You want me to go into that room with all those kids, correct their disruptive behavior, observe them for signs of abuse, monitor their dress habits, censor their T-shirt messages, and instill in them a love for learning.

You want me to check their backpacks for weapons, wage war on drugs and sexually transmitted diseases, and raise their sense of self-esteem and personal pride...

You want me to teach them patriotism and good citizenship, sportsmanship and fair play, and how to register to vote, balance a checkbook, and apply for a job.

You want me to check their heads for lice, recognize signs of antisocial behavior, and make sure that they all pass the final exams.

You also want me to provide them with an equal education regardless of their handicaps, and communicate regularly with their parents in English, Spanish or any other language, by letter, telephone, newsletter, and report card.

You want me to do all this with a piece of chalk, a blackboard, a bulletin board, a few books, a big smile, and a starting salary that qualifies me for food stamps.

You want me to do all this and then you tell me .... I CAN’T PRAY?'"

A recent rendition of her quote added, “That I'm greedy; that I have an easy job; that my pension is too big; that my salary should be frozen; and that I should pay for my own health insurance. And, also, that my union should not be able to bargain for better working conditions.”

Maybe as a country we need to look closer at the decisions we are making on where to cut the deficit?

CONTAGIOUS STRESS

by Keith Wilhelm

quotes3 Yes. Stress is contagious. Just ask my wife.

What it would be like to come home every day to a grumpy spouse. I used to do this to my spouse. Then I began to notice that she was beginning to become grumpy also. My stress was beginning to affect her. She had finally caught my contagions stress. She was now a grumpy woman.

I am proud to say that if you learn to be stress hardy you can have a much better life. We did and because of it we have now been married for over thirty happy years. We have learned how to deal with our stress together and individually.

Stress can be caught from anyone unless you become stress hardy. This is the process of building yourself up to resist the negative effects of a stressed out person.

You too can learn to deal with your stress and enjoy a happier life because of it.

10steps

Here are some tips for developing stress hardiness.

Ten Steps For Stress Hardiness.

1.
Know that stress hardiness begins with you. Learn to deal with your stress problems and you will be much happier. The happier you are, the harder it is for someone else to cause you stress.

2. Take care of yourself physically. Try this test. Stay up late for a few days and work overtime everyday. Now notice how tired you are, and how hard it is to deal with trouble. What you eat is also very important. A great comparison is putting bad fuel in your fancy vehicle. If you do this it will let you down, run bad and die. Like wise, if you put bad food in your system, your body will give you poor performance and eventually you will die.

3. Counting your blessings. Most of you have heard this before. Well, that is because it works. Begin and end your day by being thankful for what you have and your days will be blessed with feelings of gratefulness.

4. Plan your day. This great little secret will save you enough time in your day to do the important things you need to do for yourself. A plan will help keep you focused and going in the right direction. Don¡¯t forget to plan out of your day things you don¡¯t need to do or can be done by someone else.

5. Start your day off with some peppy, bubbly music. First thing in the morning I like to listen to music that peps me up and gets me going. It¡¯s better than coffee and the only side effects are the bubbly feelings inside. You might find yourself dancing on your way to work.

6. Get involved with helping others. This is the best way to get your mind off your problems. This tip makes you a real blessing to others because we are our brothers¡¯ keepers.

7. Sometimes life deals out a situation that we won¡¯t know how to deal with. Get help from someone before it gets out of hand.

8. Build someone up everyday. Tell them they are great. Say hi and smile to everyone you meet. Spread as many blessings as you can. The reward is unbelievable.

9. Do something for yourself. Start a hobby. I took up drumming and meet some wonderful people in the process. On drumming nights I sleep like a baby and feel great the next day.

10. Always remember that you are a wonderful person. You, like all people, deserve to be loved and respected.”

The Surprising Truth About Attitudes In The Workplace

A recently released large-scale study of workplace attitudes reveals that minority employees are just as engaged at work as their white colleagues. These results came from a study done by Sirota Survey Intelligence reviewing over 800,000 employee responses in 40 companies over the last five years.

Both white and minority managers had an 80% and 81% rating, respectively, on a favorable view of employee engagement at work. Regular employees rated themselves favorably with whites scoring 76% and minorities scoring 79%.

On fairness, African-American managers perceive that there is less fairness and development opportunities in their workplace with 61% rating the environment favorable versus 75% for whites. Hispanics reported at 74% and Asians at 68%.

Among regular employees the numbers were even lower, with only 59% of African-Americans rating the workplace favorable on fairness versus 66% for whites.

Finally, Hispanic managers and employees were the most engaged with a rating of 83% and 89%, respectively.

Get A Dog And Live Longer!

mansbestfriend Even though I have dog I’m not making a prejudice statement. It seems that dog owners 50 and older see their doctors less often, have fewer illnesses and recover more quickly when they are sick verses those who don’t have a dog.

Researchers have even found that simply petting an animal lowers blood pressure by producing an instant relaxation response in the body.

Alan Beck, Sc.D., from the Purdue University School of Veterinary Medicine reported that animal owners had a higher one-year survival rate following a heart attack than a non-pet group, even when both groups were doing the same level of exercise.

Perhaps retirement communities should reconsider their no pet policies and hospitals and nursing homes could allow the family pet to come to visit the patient.

(As reported in AARP Magazine)

Overcome Depression With Healthy Fats

AmJournalofPhysiciatry A study published in the American Journal of Psychiatry reported that 6 out of 10 people suffering from depression got relief after taking omega-3 fatty acid-rich fish oil supplements.

fishoil Those who got the supplements containing 2,000 mg of EPA slept better and felt less worthlessness and guilt.

Don’t take fish oil if you’re on Coumadin or fat-blocking medication.

Cancer, Cell Phones: Low Energy Electromagnetic Fields (EMFS) & Q-Link

cellphonesI read a study from Denmark last year which reported that using cell phones did not appear to cause brain tumors. The study asked 427 people with brain tumors and 822 people without tumors about their cell phone use. The study found no increased risk for brain tumors related to use, frequency of use or number of years used.

A reader of the Teplitz Email Report emailed me about whether I would continue to recommend the Q-Link, which is a device I wear and recommend to others. It’s a good question and I want to answer it.

qlink_black_back One of the things the Q-Link does is stop people from being affected by low-energy Electromagnetic Fields (EMFs) which are emitted by anything electronic including cell phones. First of all, I doubt pro golfers would stop using it because they win more tournaments while wearing it. (If you need more information on this you can re-read what I wrote in previous issues of the Teplitz Email Report at http://linkbee.com/TeplitzReport about golfers’ success with the Q-Link by using the search feature.)

I consider the EMFs coming from cell phones and anything else electronic as a science experiment with all of us the subjects being studied. EMFs never existed on the planet before the invention of electronic gadgets. Now they are all around us. We experience them not only from our cell phone, but also from our computers, TVs, alarm clocks, bed lamps and even our car engines.

Just because the Denmark study found no connection between brain tumors and cell phones doesn’t mean that other effects don’t exist—we may just haven’t discovered them yet. There are many examples of our society employing a new “breakthrough” discovery which was supposed to be harmless to humans only to later discover the negative consequences.

A prime example is DDT. When DDT was invented, it was hailed as the miracle pesticide. Only later was it discovered that DDT caused the shells of birds’ eggs, including Bald Eagles, to become so thin that they broke before the chick could hatch.

Other examples are cigarettes and asbestos. It was many years before it was discovered how these substance negatively affected our health. Part of the difficulty is that it took years for symptoms to appear and many more years before scientists were able to make a connection. While I’m not saying there is a connection, at this point no one knows whether or not getting asthma, obesity, autism, heart disease, etc. might be related to EMFs. If there is a connection, like smoking cigarettes, it might not show up for 20 to 40 years.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has been conducting research on EMFs since 1996 in conjunction with the FDA. As an example, some of their studies have reported that low frequency electromagnetic field exposure may suppress secretion of melatonin and that it may be a carcinogen for childhood leukemia.

In fact, the studies concluded that there was sufficient evidence from the childhood leukemia research to classify ELF magnetic fields as a "possible human carcinogen". WHO states that it will take years to determine if there are other definitive long-term effects to EMF exposure. Since their website contains dozens of "white paper" and fact sheets where you can find the above statements, you can go to: http://linkbee.com/WorldHealth

Q-link Besides the positive impact on golfers, I have personally received very positive feedback from people who have purchased a Q-Link from me.  So… I will continue to wear my Q-Link and continue to recommend it to others.* In fact, I'm offering a special Package, especially for couples - 2 Q-Links at my lowest price ever..... go to: Qlink Discount and Information.

Women's Stress & Oxytocin

WOMEN EXPERIENCE STRESS DIFFERENTLY

Prevention magazine reported a study of women and their response to stress.

Seems there's a chemical released when women are under stress called oxytocin.

It actually encourages the woman to tend children and gather with other women. When she does tend and gather, even more oxytocin is released which continues to counter stress effects and also produces a calming effect.

My suggestion for women when stress hits  - show your boyfriend or husband this blurb and head to your support network of female friends.

Take Pistachio Nuts To Reduce Stress, High Blood Pressure and Lighten the Load on your Heart!

Pistachio Nuts and Stress Reduction:

Here’s a great tasty way to reduce stress – eat a handful of pistachio nuts every day.  This may sound nutty, but it’s true.

Nutritionists at Penn State University had students eat pistachio nuts daily for a month. They found this kept the students’ blood pressure down in stressful situations.

When they upped the amount to two handfuls every day, the students’ arteries relaxed, which may lighten how hard the heart has to work.

So…start shelling those pistachios!

While Stress Creates Fat In Our Bodies, There May Be A Way Out

Chronic stress causes the body to create fat deposits around our stomach area. Scientists reported in Nature Medicine that mice that are experiencing stress activate a hormone, neuropeptide Y, which leads to fat accumulation.

This study sheds some light on why we may gain weight when we are under stress. Scientists are now beginning to study how to turn off this hormonal response. Stay tuned for more information.

SOD May Increase Life Span

No, I'm not taking about grass, I'm taking about Superoxide Dismutase (SOD).

In the book Critical Reviews of Oxidative Stress and Aging, JS Beckman reports that SOD stops an oxidant called peroxynitrite in its tracks.

In fruit flies, the removal of SOD resulted in a 60% reduction in their life span. Adding SOD corrected that outcome.

While we are not fruit flies, it may be a good thing to consider adding SOD to your supplements. I have.
