The Brain and The Impact Of A Smile

bigsmileWhat kind of brain wave patterns does looking at someone smile trigger?

Well, it turns out that a smile triggers the same brain wave pattern as if you learned that you had just won $40,000. Researchers also discovered that those who smiled the most lived an extra seven years.

So…$40,000…Seven Years…why that’s enough to make you smile!

The Power of Your Subconscious Mind

submind2It turns out only a tiny portion of your mind is dedicated to conscious behavior. The rest is the subconscious mind regulating our organs, digestion, breathing and even the flashes of insight we get.

The best way to mess up this finely tuned system is to attempt to do even simple things consciously. Some simple examples: if you play the piano, concentrate on your fingers: and if you are a golfer, analyze your swing while you are doing it. This type of memory is called implicit memory, which means that your brain holds this knowledge and your mind cannot explicitly access it. These two types of memory are so distinct you can damage one without hurting the functioning of the other.

An illustration would be research that has been done with patients who cannot consciously recall new experiences in their lives. The researchers spent the afternoon teaching the patients a video game. The next day, the patients said they had no recollection of learning the game and that they had never see it before.

When the researchers looked at the patient’s performance, they found the patients improved as much as a group of controls who had no memory problems. This means the implicit part of their brain learned the game and it allowed them to improve their skills.

Another example is with dementia patients. If you read them a story one day and then read the same story the next several days, the dementia patients will become bored even though they have no conscious memory of having heard the story before.

So…if you know someone with dementia, make sure to continue to give them varied activities to do.

Use Meditation To Stop Pain

mediationroomMeditation can stop pain from happening. Research reported on LiveScience.com reveals how this happens. Meditation changes the way your brain processes pain signals.

They found that it only took four days of practicing a meditation technique called mindfulness meditation to change the pain responses in your brain. Brain activity decreased in areas devoted to monitoring a painful body part and also in areas responsible for relaying sensory information. This reduced the perception of pain by 57%.

Since the effect is so fast, if you have to go into the hospital for surgery, you might want to learn how to meditate at least four days ahead and start doing it twice a day. Oh, and you will want to continue meditating during your recovery.

How To Tap Into That Creative Idea

greatideaSo, you need some creative problem-solving juices and it seems that the idea well seems to be empty. Is there a way to prime the pump?

A recent study from Northwestern and Drexel Universities suggests a way to get those juices flowing again. You just have to get amused and chuckle about something!

The researchers found that a positive state of mind increases the likelihood of achieving a creative insight. So…watch a YouTube video that will make you laugh.

Sending Thoughts Can Affect The Growth Of Lettuce Seeds

lettuceIf you've been at one of my seminars, you may have seen me demonstrate how the sending of thoughts can impact another person.

An experiment was done by Lynne McTaggart at a seminar she was conducting for 100 people that gives further validation to the sending of thoughts. In her experiment McTaggart, who was conducting the seminar in New York State, had the attendees focus on seeds which were in England with the following intention in mind: "My intention is for all seeds in our target group to sprout at least three inches by the fourth day of growing."

The researcher found that the focused intention caused significantly larger seed growth overall in both the intention seeds and even in the control seeds as compared to earlier experiments where the intention was not as specific.

To me, this means it's important that you are clear about what you are focusing on. The old adage applies - be careful what you pray for, you might just get it.

A Brain Might Not Be Necessary..

brain In his Schwartz Report Stephan Schwartz tells the story of a young woman who was a cheerleader, an honor student and about to go to Brown University when she was in a terrible car accident.

When the doctors opened her skull to relieve pressure, they were stunned to discover that instead of a brain, the cavity contained only a sack of fluid.

Dr. John Lorber, a neurology professor at the University of Sheffield, reported performing a CAT-scan that showed no brain in the skull of an academically bright student with a high IQ.

Instead Lorber found a small piece of brain tissue covering the top of his spinal column.

This is not unusual according to Lorber, who identified several hundred people who appeared normal but had very small brains.

Even the medical journal The Lancet has published an MRI of a 44-year-old man with very little brain tissue.

So…all of this raises a number of interesting questions, the most prominent being “Do I need my brain and what does it do anyway?”

Using Your Mind To Relieve Arthritis Pain

Researchers from the University of Maryland School of Medicine have been busy. They also researched the impact of a meditation technique called Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) on chronic arthritis.

The researchers found that people with rheumatoid arthritis who practiced MBSR for 6 months were 35% less distressed than those who didn’t use this method – even though their physical disease progressed at the same rates as the control group.

Other studies have shown that MBSR works to reduce pain by constantly refocusing the mind on the present moment. To learn how to do MBSR read Full Catastrophe Living by Jon Kabat-Zinn.

Relationship Between The Conscious And The Unconscious Minds

Relationship Between The Conscious And The Unconscious Minds:

The unconscious part of the human brain can see and respond to things that it is not consciously aware that it is seeing. Recently, French and English scientists had volunteers play a simple game while undergoing a brain scan. The subjects held a handgrip while watching a computer screen. They were told to squeeze the handgrip whenever they saw a picture of money on the screen. The more they squeezed the more money they would win.

While some pictures stayed on the screen long enough to be identified, others raced by. Regardless, the image of a British pound caused the volunteers to squeeze harder than they did at the sight of a penny, even when it appeared so quickly that they were not consciously aware of what kind of money they were seeing. The researchers found that the same part of the brain became active whether the response was conscious or unconscious. This is a good example of how the conscious and unconscious are working together.

In another study subjects were shown pictures of human faces while the researchers scanned their brains. In some trials, the subjects chose two words to describe the expressions they saw on each face they viewed. This forced them to consciously reflect on the emotions that they saw. In other trials, subjects chose a name for each face, but no attention was drawn to the emotions that were being expressed.

When the subjects only chose a name for a face that was expressing an emotion, the amygdala region of the brain activated. The amygdala is part of our survival mechanism as it reacts unconsciously to emotional situations. In the subjects who used words to describe the faces, the amygdala remained quiet while an area involved with refection, reasoning, and self-control was activated.

This means that sometimes our unconscious mind will work even more effectively than our conscious mind to assist us in knowing what is going on in the world. At other times our unconscious mind won’t even be aware of what we are doing. The writer of this article felt that when the unconscious mind is not being triggered we have the conscious free will to decide what we want to be doing.

THE USE OF FAITH TO STOP PAIN

THE USE OF FAITH TO STOP PAIN

A study reported in the Journal of Pain found that having a daily spiritual ritual or experience can help people with chronic pain feel better.

They had 35 people with rheumatoid arthritis keep daily diaries that rated their religious coping strategies, pain levels, mood and social support. People who had less pain had religious and coping strategies that worked for them personally.
