What’s Growing Around Your Dishwasher–What to Do About Exophiala

dishwasher2According to a study published in Fungal Biology, researchers found that 35% of dishwashers tested in 101 cities contained a black fungi called Exophiala on the rubber seal of the doors.

It seems that the hot, moist environment is a perfect breeding ground for the fungi to grow. This fungi is particularly dangerous for children, the elderly and people with cystic fibrosis.

There are a couple things you can do to stop the fungi. First, clean the rubber seal with a bleach solution and second, leave the dishwasher door open to air-dry after use.

Stopping Your Food Cravings with this spice..

saffronResearchers from the University of Pittsburgh found that the culinary spice saffron may stop your food cravings.

Saffron raises serotonin, a neurotransmitter that boost mood, influences hunger and helps put the brakes on food cravings.

In the study they conducted, mildly overweight women, ages 25-45, were divided into two groups. Half took one 90 mg capsule of a standardized saffron extract with breakfast and a second capsule with dinner.

The other group was given placebo pills. For eight weeks neither group made diet changes, but they were asked to record all food eaten outside of mealtimes.

The saffron pill popping women lost 2.1 pounds and they reported snacking half as often as before and feeling less hungry between meals.

Keep in mind that it takes up to four weeks to see results. So…happy saffroning!

Not Having Enough Folic Acid May Speed Up Hearing Loss

hearinglossSince I mentioned folic acid in the last blurb, let me share with you research published in the Journal of Nutrition that linked a deficiency of folic acid in the blood with a 35% increased risk of hearing loss.

The researchers found that folate levels below 11 nanomoles per liter was associated with a 34% increased risk of age-related hearing loss and if the levels of homocysteine was 20 micromoles per liter it was associated with a 64% increase in the risk of hearing loss.

In another study published in the Annals of Internal Medicine, scientist reported that, among 728 men and women between the ages of 50 to 70, folic acid supplements reduced the risk of developing hearing loss by 20%.

So…combining the research in the story above, you may reduce your dementia while you increase your hearing by taking folic acid and the other B-Vitamins.

Sources include cereals, baked goods, leafy vegetables (spinach, broccoli, lettuce), okra, asparagus, fruits (bananas, melons, lemons), legumes, yeast, mushrooms, organ meat (beef liver, kidney), orange juice, and tomato juice.

Taking B-Vitamins May Help Reduce The Risk Of Alzheimer’s Disease

bA study published in Public Library of Science One conducted by the University of Oxford found that a combination of folic acid, Vitamins B6 and B12 (which are all B-Vitamins) appears to slow brain atrophy in elderly patients with mild cognitive impairment.

The study followed 168 participants over two years. One-half were treated with a European drug called TrioBe Plus® which contained a combination of folic acid (0.8 mg/d), and Vitamins B6 (20 mg/d) and B12 (o.5 mg/d). The other group received a placebo.

Those taking the vitamins had on average 29.6% less brain shrinkage. The vitamins also reduced homocysteine by 22.5%. Homocysteine was found in The Framingham Study to double a person’s risk of dementia if they had homocysteine levels above 14 micromoles per liter of serum.

By the way, this is an example of where a drug company is researching a combination of vitamins and if successful, then the drug company will patent the vitamin formula. The drug company will then be able to raise the price of the vitamins to drug price levels.

Fortunately, you can still get a B-Complex which will have all these ingredients. You can even buy them separately. So…if someone you know has dementia, get them taking these B-Vitamins.

Being Real Busy Can Be Healthy

toobusy2You’re busy, busy, busy. It turns out that you may be healthier than people who say they are often bored.

British researchers found that the bored people were more likely to die of a heart attack.

Boredom may be linked to skipping workouts and junk food, which can lead to depression and poor health.

So…if you’re going to be busy, busy, busy - make sure you eat healthy and leave time to exercise, too.

SOS Next Training Opportunity In Canada–Feb 2012

Success-Switched-On-Seminars-TeplitzYou’re Crazy… If You Don’t Take The Next Opportunity To Attend the Switched-On Selling™ and Switched-On Network Marketing™ Seminars & Instructor Trainings.

Because of the powerful impact of my Switched-On Selling™ (SOS) and Switched-On Network Marketing™ Seminars (SONM), you’ve got to be crazy to pass up the opportunity to take the class I’m conducting February, 2012 in Toronto, Canada.

All you have to do to convince yourself is take the time to read some of the research studies we’ve done over the last 22 years validating the impact of these training programs (Click here to read them now).

Let me put it this way - don’t spend another cent on a sales training seminar, CD, DVD or book until you’ve taken either the Switched-On Selling™ or Switched-On Network™ Marketing Seminars.

Put All Other Training on Hold Until You Master SOS:
“Of all the Superstars that I have coached —Tony Robbins, Jack Canfield, Mark Hansen, John Gray, Lisa Nichols, and so many others—and assisted along their journey, Dr. Jerry Teplitz is my favorite for deep content. His immediate ‘stick to the ribs,’ CEO-level put-it-in-the-workplace processes can change your bottom line results in a single session.

On sales and marketing, Dr. Teplitz is the leading master trainer in the world today.  That’s why we literally BEG Jerry to teach at our trade shows for the world’s elite business leaders five times a year.

Put all other training on hold until you master Switched-On Selling™ - then watch the impact this powerful training will have on your profit account next quarter.”
B.J. Dohrmann, Founder of CEOSPACE, best- selling author, and Radio show host

These seminars are absolutely unique, helping you to rewire your brain so that whatever is stopping you from being successful in sales or network marketing will be gone in minutes. Once you’ve finished the class, you can go back to learning the technique side of selling or network marketing and you’ll find it’s a breeze to actually do what you’re learning.

Let me give you one example of the impact that the Switched-On Selling™ Seminar had on Serge Gravelle, President/CEO of My Mall Network Corporation. Serge is a webmaster and had gone to a conference three times to market his web services without closing a single sale. Here’s what changed for Serge within 24 hours after attending the SOS Seminar:

“The results were instantaneous. At the end of the first day we had closed seven contracts, seven times more than we had done during the preceding eight months. By the end of the show, we had signed eighteen contracts. The best part is that I enjoyed making the sales, a feeling I had a hard time experiencing in the past."

Let me share with you the actual statistics from a company that put their sales force through the SOS seminar during the middle of the worst recession since the depression.

Kevin Kordek is the CEO of A-Active Termite and Pest Control and the immediate past president of the National Pest Control Association. In August 2009, he decided to put half his sales force through the one-day Switched-On Selling™ Seminar. The results were so positive that Kevin put the rest of his people through the seminar in October.

I spoke to him over a year later and Kordek told me results started happening from the first group of eight sales people he put through the seminar. Kevin said six of them immediately jumped above his top-tier salespeople. They set an entirely new level of success within the company!

After putting the rest of the sales force through the seminar, he told me his company became the #1 distributor in the country on two of his high-end product lines, and that one of his salespeople even increased his closing percentage by 300 percent!

Keep in mind this was during the recession and the slow recovery while most of the other companies in the Pest Control industry were falling apart.

Was there anything special or different about Kevin’s sales people? I asked Kevin and he simply said “No. The first group was made up of mediocre sales people before they attended the one day SOS seminar.”

To help entice you to come with us to Canada in February, 2012 to attend the class, I have set up an early bird registration fee and all persons who register for either the SOS or SONM Seminars, you will also receive a F.R.E.E. copy of my Amazon #1 bestselling book Switched-On Selling: Balance Your Brain For Sales Success!

The Power Of Exercise For Curing Cancer And Preventing Its Recurrence

macmilliancancerWhen you get cancer and are going through treatment, doctors have been recommending that you take it easy and don’t exercise much. Well, it turns out that this advice is wrong and that exercise can reduce the risk of dying from cancer and also minimize the side effects caused by the treatment. This recommendation comes from a report by Macmillan Cancer Support.

The report says getting active can help you overcome the effects of cancer and its treatments, such as fatigue and weight gain. Previous research has shown that exercising to the recommended levels can reduce the risk of breast cancer recurrence by up to 30 percent. Bowel cancer patients’ risk of dying from the disease can be cut by around 50 percent by doing around six hours of moderate physical activity a week.

Harvard Medical School researchers found patients who exercise moderately, 3 to 5 hours a week, reduced their odds of dying from breast cancer by about 50% as compared to sedentary women. The benefit even remained constant regardless of whether women were diagnosed early on or after their cancer had spread.

For men, 3 hours per week of moderate-intensity physical activity lowered the risk of prostate cancer death by about 30% and also lowered the rate of the disease progressing by 57%.

Exercise can even reduce the side effects from conventional cancer treatments, such as:

  • Reducing fatigue and improving energy levels

  • Improving heart health

  • Improving appetite

  • Maintaining a healthy weight

  • Sleeping better and even

  • Preventing constipation

As Jane Maher, chief medical officer of Macmillan Cancer Support and clinical oncologist said “if physical exercise were a drug, it would be hitting the headlines". So…if you have a friend or loved one who has cancer, urge them to start getting active and getting a moderate level of exercise (including strengthen training).

The Brain and The Impact Of A Smile

bigsmileWhat kind of brain wave patterns does looking at someone smile trigger?

Well, it turns out that a smile triggers the same brain wave pattern as if you learned that you had just won $40,000. Researchers also discovered that those who smiled the most lived an extra seven years.

So…$40,000…Seven Years…why that’s enough to make you smile!

The Power of Your Subconscious Mind

submind2It turns out only a tiny portion of your mind is dedicated to conscious behavior. The rest is the subconscious mind regulating our organs, digestion, breathing and even the flashes of insight we get.

The best way to mess up this finely tuned system is to attempt to do even simple things consciously. Some simple examples: if you play the piano, concentrate on your fingers: and if you are a golfer, analyze your swing while you are doing it. This type of memory is called implicit memory, which means that your brain holds this knowledge and your mind cannot explicitly access it. These two types of memory are so distinct you can damage one without hurting the functioning of the other.

An illustration would be research that has been done with patients who cannot consciously recall new experiences in their lives. The researchers spent the afternoon teaching the patients a video game. The next day, the patients said they had no recollection of learning the game and that they had never see it before.

When the researchers looked at the patient’s performance, they found the patients improved as much as a group of controls who had no memory problems. This means the implicit part of their brain learned the game and it allowed them to improve their skills.

Another example is with dementia patients. If you read them a story one day and then read the same story the next several days, the dementia patients will become bored even though they have no conscious memory of having heard the story before.

So…if you know someone with dementia, make sure to continue to give them varied activities to do.

Great Results At My Physical Examination

physexamWith all the things I personally do to manage my stress and increase my longevity, I thought I’d report to you the results from my latest physical examination by my doctor.

Now, keep in mind as you read these results, I turned 64 in March.

My blood pressure is 100/58 (normal for my age is 134/87), my pulse is 62 beats per minute (normal for my age is 72-75), my total cholesterol is 185 and my cholesterol ratio is a low 3.36, and my Vitamin D is 53.1 (above 50 is in the optimum rate). On every other measurement I was within the standard ranges.

The other plus is I don’t look my age, act my age or feel my age - Pretty cool!

Electromagnetic Fields Can Affect Pregnant Women’s Babies

electro-pregnantA study published in the Archives of Pediatrics & Adolescent Medicine strapped monitors to pregnant women to measure their exposure to low-frequency electromagnetic fields. These are fields generated by everything from power lines, microwave ovens, computers, hair dryers and vacuum cleaners.

The researchers followed the children over their first 13 years and found that those born to mothers with the highest levels of exposure were three times as likely to have asthma as kids whose moms had the lowest exposure.

(Reported Time, August 15, 2011)

So… one option you have to prevent being affected by electromagnetic fields is to wear a QLink like I do (for other reasons besides being pregnant, LOL, such as, preventing the impact of cell phone radiation).

So, What to Do If You Do Have Abnormal Test Results on the Alzheimer’s Balance Test?

niacinamideUntil recently there hasn’t been a really effective treatment for Alzheimer’s disease. The only approach was prevention strategies.

Well, there is now a safe, inexpensive and effective treatment. It is using vitamin B3 – Nicotinic Acid (in the form of niacinamide, a no-flush form of niacin or B3).

Nicotinic acid (B3) and its amide, niacinamide, are called vitamers, because both equivalently act as a vitamin. Niacin (a word derived from the Nicotinic acid vitamin) is a generic term describing both vitamers together.

An observational study of over 6,000 people 65 years of age and older found that compared to people in the lowest fifth of niacin intake, those with higher intake had reduced between 20% to 50% the progression and risk of Alzheimer's Disease. This result was after adjustment for age, sex, race, education, ApoE type and intake of vitamins E & C as well as beta-carotene. The effect was specific to B3, as opposed to the other B vitamins [JOURNAL OF NEUROLOGY, NEUROSURGERY, AND PSYCHIATRY; Morris,MC; 75(8):1093-1099 (2004)].

In further research, Niacinamide was also shown to cause a 60% decrease in the marker called tau protein.

Niacinamide additionally increased microtubules, which carry information inside brain cells. Microtubules are like highways inside the cells. Niacinamide makes the highways wider and more stable.

Some of the research done with mice and niacinamide brought the mice back to the level where they didn’t have the pathology. It even improved the behavior in non-demented animals.

The researchers think that niacinamide is good for Alzheimer’s disease and normal people, too. Since niacinamide has been used extensively for many purposes over the past 60 years, its safety is well proven.

The amount of niacinamide that is recommended is 1,000 milligrams taken three times a day.

In adult doses above 3 grams per day niacinamide has a potential for causing liver damage [DIABETOLOGIA; Knip,M; 43(11):1337-1345 (2000)].  Always seek your doctor’s advice in determining dosage safe for you.

As an aside, nearly everyone in another study reported that their arthritis symptoms disappeared after three to four of months of taking niacinamide.

A Balance Test to Predict Alzheimer’s Disease

Balance-AlzheimersThere’s now a simple balance test that may predict cognitive decline in Alzheimer’s Disease.

This study was published in the Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease and was carried out in 16 university hospitals with 686 outpatients.

What the participants did was a one-leg balance where they were asked to stand on one leg for as long as possible.  The results were abnormal when the participant was unable to stand on one leg for 5 seconds or more.

The participants who were judged abnormal on the test showed significantly more cognitive decline at 12, 18 and 24 months than participants who were normal at the beginning of the study and at the follow-up.

The researchers believe that the one-leg balance test is a predictor of advanced dementia.

Speeding up healing process after surgery

surgeryThere are a number of things that you can do to speed up the healing process after surgery.

Here are some options you have:

  • Use hypnosis – Having a hypnotherapy session before surgery can reduce the need for anesthesia and result in less pain, nausea, vomiting and fatigue afterward
  • Play Steven Halpern’s subliminal music CD Accelerated Self-Healing during and after the surgery. While the music will relax you, the subliminal messages will help to speed up the healing process.
  • Visualize your recovery - Many studies have shown that guided imagery helps decrease discomfort and the need for pain medication while also reducing the side effects and complications from surgery.
  • Meditate during and after the surgery - I personally have used this technique for years every time I have to go to the dentist and need to have a tooth filled or a crown put on. I have also used meditation twice when I had hernia surgeries. The doctor just injected Novocain on the area while I meditated. The doctor was surprised that I was able to maintain a very low heart rate and pulse rate during the entire surgery.
  • Use acupuncture points to help prevent postoperative nausea and vomiting from anesthesia. You’ll need to stimulate the acupressure point on the inside of the wrist called P6. You can get an acupressure wrist band at the pharmacy. Ask your doc if you can wear it during the surgery.
  • Except for some vitamins and minerals that can thin your blood (ask your doc which those are), you can increase the vitamin and mineral supplements you are taking. One way to view surgery is that it is an internal remodeling job on your body. When you remodel a house you would make sure you have all the building materials available before you started the demolition work. The same thing applies to the body. You want to make sure you have all the materials available to allow the body to rebuild itself. That’s what vitamin and minerals are, your body’s building materials.

So, here are my recommendation for pre- and post surgery:
Divide the following dosage recommendations by the number of meals that you eat each day. The vitamins and minerals will absorb better when you take them in smaller doses. Start taking them 10 days to 2 weeks before surgery. Continue taking them for several weeks afterwards. When you are finished healing, slowly taper off the vitamins. Take a week to 10 days to stop. (Actually, I'd recommend you continue because of the beneficial impact that the vitamins and minerals will have on your overall health. Just lower the dosages.)

1. Vitamin C with bioflavonoids – get 500 mg tablets of Vitamin C with 100 mg of bioflavonoids. Total per day - 2,000 to 4,000 mg
2. Vitamin E – 800 IU (make sure the label says d-alpha tocopherols. The "d" is the important piece as it means it’s natural).
4. Zinc – 30 mg
5. B-Complex – High potency - where most ingredients add up to 100 mg per day
6. Multi Mineral – Ask for a high potency one
7. Bromelain – 1,000 mg (Don't take if you are allergic to pineapple or papaya)
8. Vitamin D3 – 10,000 to 20,000 IU per day
9. The amino acid arginine – 2 mg three times per day on an empty stomach

To prevent bacteria and viral infections, take Echinacea and Astragalus. I’ve given this recipe to many people (including myself) and I’ve always gotten the same feedback – their doc was surprised at how fast they healed and the lack of any side effects or complications.

Stopping Colds In Their Tracks Using An Essential Oil

eucalyptus-coldsAnother way to stop the stuffy nose symptoms of a cold is to use a eucalyptus oil compress.

According to Ann Louise Gittelman, PhD, the oil’s natural anti-inflammatory and expectorant properties help open congested nasal passages.

What you can do is dampen a washcloth with hot water and then place a drop or two of eucalyptus oil on the cloth. Place it by your nose and inhale…ahhhhh! Relief is just a breath away!

(Reported Prevention December 2010)

Stopping Colds In Their Tracks By Exercising

bjsmResearchers reported in the British Journal of Sports Medicine that regular exercise can cut the odds of catching a cold by 50%.

The researchers asked healthy volunteers to keep a record of any coughs and sniffles they experienced over a three-month period during fall and winter. The volunteers who were physically active on five or more days of the week had colds that lasted a total of 5 days out of the 3-month period, while the control group, who did little or no exercise during the same period, were affected by colds and sniffles for nine days.

As a side benefit, the exercisers who did get a cold cut the severity of the symptoms by 31%.

Finally, if you do get a cold, continuing to exercise even at lower level of intensity and time can make you feel better.

So…just put one foot in front of the other and keep exercising.

Vinegar For Lowering Blood Sugar Levels And For Weight Loss

apple-cider-vinegar-weightlossVinegar can be used to lower blood sugar levels after eating a meal. It inhibits enzymes necessary for the digestion of starches and other complex carbohydrates preventing them from being broken down into glucose and absorbed into the bloodstream.

Taken at bedtime it can also lower morning fasting blood sugar levels. All of this means that it may help prevent people from getting type-2 diabetes.

Vinegar also stimulates the burning of fat for weight loss. Researchers in Japan divided subjects into three groups. One group drank one tablespoon of apple cider vinegar each day and the other group drank 2 tablespoons. The third group drank a placebo. After 12 weeks the vinegar drinking groups had lost 4.4 pounds compared to the placebo group which reported no change. The researchers also found that one tablespoon per day was sufficient to achieve these results.

The amount of vinegar needed is one to two tablespoons per day which can be added to foods you are eating.  One popular way of doing this is to add two teaspoons to a glass of water with a teaspoon or so of honey, mix well, and enjoy!

I’ve actually begun adding vinegar to my morning meal. So…please pass the apple cider vinegar!

Bulking Up Your Bones & Preventing Osteoporosis

strontium-ranelateHere’s a great way to increase your bone density – use strontium ranelate or strontium citrate.

Researchers in Germany gave a group of men strontium ranelate. After 12 months the men who had taken strontium ranelate had a 22-23% greater increase in bone mass density in the lumbar spine and hip. They also had 30% fewer fractures and significantly greater reduction in back pain.

While strontium ranelate is sold as a drug in 70 countries around the world; the FDA has not approved it here. Your option in this country is to take strontium citrate which has a similar effect and can be purchased without a prescription.

Protect Yourself and Your Family From Mosquitoes

MosquitoesIt's mosquito time again and I’ve printed this information before, but in case you missed it or forgot it, here it is again.

I want to share with you some natural steps you can take to prevent mosquito bites. Yes, you can buy bug spray loaded with poisons, but do you really want that in or on your body when there are much safer options?

One option has recently been approved by the Center for Disease Control. Oil of eucalyptus offers a protection level that is similar to products with low concentrations of DEET. You can find it in Repel's Lemon Eucalyptus.

Two other options were reported in a study published in the New England Journal of Medicine. The researchers found that a soybean based product called Bite Blocker was the most effective and another product called Buzz Away was also effective.

Another natural alternative that I have written about in a previous Teplitz Email Report is a vitamin supplement called Vitamin B1. When you are going to be outside, all you need to do is take 100 mg every six to eight hours and it will protect you from being bitten.

The Army did the original research on vitamin B1 a number of years ago. They sent two groups of soldiers out into the bush for two weeks. One group was given bug goop and the other group took only Vitamin B1. When they came out of the bush, the group using the bug goop was covered with bug bites. The Vitamin B1 group had hardly any bites on them.

A couple of years ago, I went camping with some friends who have hiked the Appalachian Trail. They were willing to experiment and they took the Vitamin B1. Boy, were they surprised when they had no bites at all at the end of the weekend. Another friend was working as a camp counselor in Maine. She wrote me and said the B1 worked great for mosquitoes, and what did I have for gnats?

So you now have more tools to put into your prevention quiver.

Use Meditation To Stop Pain

mediationroomMeditation can stop pain from happening. Research reported on LiveScience.com reveals how this happens. Meditation changes the way your brain processes pain signals.

They found that it only took four days of practicing a meditation technique called mindfulness meditation to change the pain responses in your brain. Brain activity decreased in areas devoted to monitoring a painful body part and also in areas responsible for relaying sensory information. This reduced the perception of pain by 57%.

Since the effect is so fast, if you have to go into the hospital for surgery, you might want to learn how to meditate at least four days ahead and start doing it twice a day. Oh, and you will want to continue meditating during your recovery.

Getting Angry Can Reduce Your Stress

angrystressThere’s new information about getting angry. It used to be thought that getting angry was unhealthy and would cause stress for women.

A study published in Biological Psychiatry looked at the effect of facial expressions of emotions, such as fear and indignation, on our stress response. They found that displaying anger may cause your brain to release less of the stress hormone cortisol.

The study focused on short-term anger and frustration, such as getting cut off in traffic, not long-term anger. The researchers believe that responding to this kind of anger gives the person a feeling of control over those little things that get to you by counteracting feelings of helplessness and frustration.

So, an occasional #XY!!XZ, might actually be good for women, too.

Coconut Oil Is Coming On Strong

coconutoilA few years ago, the thought of having coconut oil as a regular part of your diet would have raised all kinds of objections that you’d be getting too much fat in your diet.

Well, times have changed and so has the information available to help us make a decision about it. Today, we realize there are fats that are actually helpful to us and one of them is coconut oil.

It turns out unprocessed virgin coconut oil consists mostly of lauric acid, which confers several health benefits. It turns out lauric acid doesn’t raise cholesterol, clog arteries or create other cardiovascular risks.

As a matter of fact, it actually enhances immune function and in therapeutic doses it may reduce the symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease.

Here’s A Unique Way To Get Into A Positive State Of Mind

happyunderwearFor women, there’s a way to feel sexier and more confident all day, and believe it or not, it’s wearing a special pair of underwear.

Turns out someone actually researched this and published the findings in Consumers Reports. The researchers found that 25% of women report that wearing an ill-fitting or ugly pair of underwear can put her in a bad mood.

What to avoid? Watch out for wedgies, not enough coverage in the rear and underwear that doesn’t lie flat under your clothes.

So…guys, this is a word to the wise. Give a gift that the researchers say will put your woman in a good, sexy mood.

Your Mouth Is Dry, What To Do Besides Drinking Water

q10About 30% of people over 65 have dry mouth syndrome. People who suffer from this lack saliva production which can cause a difficulty in swallowing, sore throats and bad breath. It can lead to tooth decay and oral infections.

Rather than take drugs, try coenzyme Q10. Volunteers who were given 100 mg of C0Q10 daily for a month had significantly improved salivary secretion.

The best form of CoQ10 is ubiquinol.

"The results were instantaneous; within 24 hours, we had closed seven contracts, seven times more than we had done during the preceding eight months. By the end of the week, we had signed eighteen contracts. The best part is that I enjoyed making the sales, a feeling I had a hard time experiencing in the past."

Company Blows The Competition Out Of The Water During The Recession

A year ago August during the middle of the recession, Kevin Kordek, CEO A-Active Termite and Pest Control, put half his sales force through the one-day Switched-On Selling Seminar.

I spoke to him last August and Kordek told me that six of the eight people immediately jumped to above his top tier salespeople.
Next, his company became the #1 distributor in the country on two of his high-end product lines, and one of his salespeople increased his closing percentage by 300 percent!

Was there anything special or different about these sales people? Kordek said “No, they were middle level sales people before they attended the one day seminar.”

A Way To Have More Strokes: Drink Diet Sodas

dietsodaThere’s an easy way to increase your risk of having a stroke: drink diet sodas.

According to a study reported at the American Stroke Association Conference, diet soda drinkers had a 61% higher risk of heart attack and stroke.

The researchers followed 2,500 New Yorkers for one plus years and found that people who drink diet soda every day had this increased risk.

Just think for a moment what’s in a diet soda – phosphoric acid, artificial colors, artificial favors and other assorted chemicals. Yummy!

So…water anyone?

To Stretch Or Not To Stretch Before You Exercise

stretchingThe wisdom has been to stretch before you run so that you reduce injuries caused by not being warmed up.

A recent study reported by George Washington University is challenging that wisdom. They divided runners into two groups. One stretched before running and the other didn’t.

The researchers found that injury rate was the same for both groups, about 16%.

However, they did find that runners who were regular stretchers before being put into the non-stretch group had a 40% higher chance of injury.

For the non-stretchers who were part of the stretching group, their risk of an injury went up 22%.

What this means to me is if you are a stretcher, keep stretching and if you’re a non-stretcher, don’t.

Cheer Yourself Up The Fast Way – Inhale

smellingThe fastest way to cheer yourself up when you are feeling down is to sniff something pleasant.

Charles Wysocki, PhD, a behavioral neuro-scientist from Mondell Chemical Senses Center found that sniffing works faster to change your mood than looking at a treasured souvenir or hearing a favorite song.

He compared the olfactory system to an interstate and our visual and auditory system to country roads.

This means your sense of smell will affect your brain faster. And the cheeriest scent may be citrus since it boosts the release of norepinephrine, a mood-regulating hormone.

So…cut that lemon or orange and inhale.

Add In Watching TV And Computer Time For A Negative Result

watchingtvI just discussed the impact of too much sitting. Now add time spent in front of a TV, computer or video game and you’re really affecting your cardiovascular health.

Researchers from the United Kingdom followed 4,500 Scottish men and women, looking at the impact of screen time. They found that people who spent at least two hours of leisure time in front of a TV or computer were more than twice as likely to have a heart attack or other cardiac event.

Those who spent four or more hours in front of the screen were 50% more likely to die.

For these screen people, their weight was higher, their cholesterol, C-reactive protein and other metabolic risk factors were all higher.

Interestingly, there were no negative links with activities such as reading, playing cards or board games.

Ways To Treat Back Pain

backpainBack pain is all around us. It’s the most common type of pain and 30% of women and 26% of men will be struck by it during any given year.

Since more and more of us are sitting for longer and longer periods of time, this figure will probably continue to rise.

Sitting actually puts more pressure on the back than when you walk or even just stand.

There are a number of things you can do about it.

1. Get up every hour and take a short stretch break.
2. Lose weight if you are overweight.
3. Don’t overdo exercising on the weekend.
4. See a chiropractor or acupuncturist.
5. Take 2000 mg of Vitamin C every day.
6. Get a standing desk.
7. Do the Shiatsu (a Japanese finger pressure technique) lower back pain treatment.

If you’d like to get my DVD called Quick Relief for Lower Back Pain at a special price for readers of the Teplitz Email Report, you can go here - http://www.teplitz.com/LowerBack.html

A Side Effect From Taking Beta-Blocker Drugs – Weight Gain

beta-blockerA study by Australian researchers published in the International Journal of Obesity found that adults on beta-blockers weighed more and had larger waistlines.

The study looked at 11,400 adults with high blood pressure and/or diabetes. The researchers also found that the participants in the study burned fewer calories and fat after a meal.

The patients on beta-blockers also reported lower levels of physical activity. The researchers actually hypothesized that the widespread use of beta-blockers may be fueling the obesity epidemic.

The only group that will actually benefit from statins and beta-blockers are people who have a genetic defect called familial hypercholesterolemia.

So…if your doc wants to you take beta-blockers, make sure you’ve got that genetic defect before you agree to take beta-blockers; otherwise, experiment with the diet, exercise and alternative therapies route first.

An Unexpected Problem With Monsanto’s Roundup

roundupThere’s another problem with Monsanto’s herbicide Roundup besides it’s encouraging the growth of super weeds, and the need for ever greater applications of insecticide. The unexpected issue is radioactivity.

It turns out that phosphate ore is mined to produce phosphorus which is used to make glyphosate, the main ingredient in Roundup.

To get the phosphorus, Monsanto maintains the only plant in the US that refines the phosphate ore.

At the end of the process you are left with molten slag which contains radioactive uranium and radium.

Oh, by the way, Monsanto produces over 200 million pounds of the stuff every year. crazy for the environment!

Cutting Pain From Osteoarthritis Of The Knee

arthritis-kneeYou’ve got osteoarthritis of the knee so you reach for the ibuprofen. Would you like more natural choices as effective as ibuprofen?

That would be curcumin or glucosamine. A study reported in the Journal of Complementary and Alternative Medicine compared the two with ibuprofen.

The research showed that the anti-inflammatory properties of these substances gave subjects relief from knee pain.

If you want to use them, take 1 gram of curcumin or 1,500 mg of glucosamine a day. (If you take blood thinners, talk to your doctor first).

Cutting Back On Teachers – Seeing The Outcome

The High Cost of Low Teacher Salaries…

teacher2I don’t usually include politically oriented blurbs in The Teplitz Email report, however, this one may have a long-term affect on the health of teachers and students.

Just listen to the amount of stress that teachers have coming at them.

The quote below was written by Harriet Vines, Ph.D., Age Smart Associates.

“After being interviewed by the school administration, the prospective teacher said:

'Let me see if I've got this right. You want me to go into that room with all those kids, correct their disruptive behavior, observe them for signs of abuse, monitor their dress habits, censor their T-shirt messages, and instill in them a love for learning.

You want me to check their backpacks for weapons, wage war on drugs and sexually transmitted diseases, and raise their sense of self-esteem and personal pride...

You want me to teach them patriotism and good citizenship, sportsmanship and fair play, and how to register to vote, balance a checkbook, and apply for a job.

You want me to check their heads for lice, recognize signs of antisocial behavior, and make sure that they all pass the final exams.

You also want me to provide them with an equal education regardless of their handicaps, and communicate regularly with their parents in English, Spanish or any other language, by letter, telephone, newsletter, and report card.

You want me to do all this with a piece of chalk, a blackboard, a bulletin board, a few books, a big smile, and a starting salary that qualifies me for food stamps.

You want me to do all this and then you tell me .... I CAN’T PRAY?'"

A recent rendition of her quote added, “That I'm greedy; that I have an easy job; that my pension is too big; that my salary should be frozen; and that I should pay for my own health insurance. And, also, that my union should not be able to bargain for better working conditions.”

Maybe as a country we need to look closer at the decisions we are making on where to cut the deficit?

A Unique Way To Improve A Child’s Concentration And Reduce ADHD

omega-krillA 2010 study published by the NPI Center (Natural and Nutritional Products Industry Center) worked with children with ADHD. The children were given krill oil for a period of 13 weeks.

The study compared EEG patterns and found that the children taking krill oil markedly improved their concentration by 60%.

A 2007 study found that adults taking krill oil reported a 50% improvement in planning skills and 49% improvement in social skills. The dose of krill oil was 500 mg per day.

The omega-3 fat in the krill oil improved the symptoms of

more effectively than drugs like Ritalin and Concerta.
