Seniors Save Money Going To The Gym

Seniors Save Money Going To The Gym

In a study reported last January, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found that seniors who went to the gym two or more times a week over two years averaged health care cost savings of over $1,200 more than those who went less than once a week.

Since regular exercise helps control weight, strengthens bones and joints, lowers pain and anxiety, reduces cardiovascular disease and increases brain health, it’s not surprising that all these added together for a bottom-line dollar impact in people’s health care costs.

With all the changes about to happen in health care, regardless of who is elected, why don’t you start your own savings program by exercising two or more times a week?

Feedback From A Reader On The Full Spectrum Lights

Feedback From A Reader On The Full Spectrum Lights:

I just received an email from Carey Hansen in Green Bay about the impact of the full spectrum fluorescent lighting she had purchased from us at http://www.jtv-energy-lights.com

She was excited because it got rid of her seasonal affective disorder illness, which causes severe depression. Here’s what she said:

“Just wanted to let you know that earlier this year I purchased lighting for the office I work in. Normally in fall I suffer from SAD… this year I had little or no affect from the change of seasons.
The only thing I can attribute it to is the lighting. If I hadn’t tried it I wouldn’t have believed it!!!  I am definitely sold on how much lighting can affect a person. Thank you sooo much!”

       Carey, you are welcome.

Researchers from the University of Toronto reported in a study published in Archives of General Psychiatry have figured out what is going on in the brain. They did brain scans of volunteers and discovered that levels of serotonin were lower in autumn and winter than spring and summer.

Because sunlight regulates a protein controlling serotonin levels, lack of sunshine means less serotonin, which is the bodies "feel good" chemical.

Alternative Therapies Gaining Ground In Hospitals

Alternative Therapies Gaining Ground In Hospitals:

The American Hospital Association reports that 37% of American hospitals are making complementary and alternative treatments available to their patients. The therapies include acupuncture, touch therapy, and music and art therapy. This percentage has grown from 2005, when it was offered by only 25% of hospitals.

The majority of hospitals are using patient satisfaction as the best way of determining whether an alterative treatment was beneficial. Next, the hospital looks at clinical data on its effectiveness. At the Cleveland Clinic, half of 1,700 patients undergoing heart surgery opted for alternatives and 93% of the patients found the services were helpful.

As an example, a nurse was having difficulty inserting an IV into a patient’s arm because of the patient’s anxiousness over her scheduled surgery. Instead of continuing to prod and poke the patient, the nurse called in a massage therapist and in 10 minutes the IV was in place.

So…if you have time to make a choice as to which hospital you go to, ask them if they offer alternative treatment programs. If they don’t, make sure to tell or write the head honcho as to why you’re not going to be using their facility. If enough folks did that, the 37% figure would grow quickly and dramatically and so would the benefits to the patients. (Reported in USA Today Online 9-14-08)

Relationship Between The Conscious And The Unconscious Minds

Relationship Between The Conscious And The Unconscious Minds:

The unconscious part of the human brain can see and respond to things that it is not consciously aware that it is seeing. Recently, French and English scientists had volunteers play a simple game while undergoing a brain scan. The subjects held a handgrip while watching a computer screen. They were told to squeeze the handgrip whenever they saw a picture of money on the screen. The more they squeezed the more money they would win.

While some pictures stayed on the screen long enough to be identified, others raced by. Regardless, the image of a British pound caused the volunteers to squeeze harder than they did at the sight of a penny, even when it appeared so quickly that they were not consciously aware of what kind of money they were seeing. The researchers found that the same part of the brain became active whether the response was conscious or unconscious. This is a good example of how the conscious and unconscious are working together.

In another study subjects were shown pictures of human faces while the researchers scanned their brains. In some trials, the subjects chose two words to describe the expressions they saw on each face they viewed. This forced them to consciously reflect on the emotions that they saw. In other trials, subjects chose a name for each face, but no attention was drawn to the emotions that were being expressed.

When the subjects only chose a name for a face that was expressing an emotion, the amygdala region of the brain activated. The amygdala is part of our survival mechanism as it reacts unconsciously to emotional situations. In the subjects who used words to describe the faces, the amygdala remained quiet while an area involved with refection, reasoning, and self-control was activated.

This means that sometimes our unconscious mind will work even more effectively than our conscious mind to assist us in knowing what is going on in the world. At other times our unconscious mind won’t even be aware of what we are doing. The writer of this article felt that when the unconscious mind is not being triggered we have the conscious free will to decide what we want to be doing.

Increase Melatonin With Special Blue Light-Blocking Glasses

Melatonin has been shown to be of value for many things. It can help us sleep better, reduce headache frequency by around 50%, reduce the length of time a migraine lasts, decrease irritable bowel syndrome abdominal pain, lower nighttime blood pressure and protect us from cellular and mitochondrial DNA damage, which can cause cancer.

While all this sounds great, we may not be producing enough melatonin in our bodies to receive these benefits. Melatonin is produced at night and bright lights dramatically reduce the production of melatonin in our bodies. Recent research has discovered a way to stop bright light’s interference with melatonin production – wear blue light-blocking glasses. These glasses filter out just the blue wave length, which is the part of the spectrum that suppresses the production of melatonin.

Canadian researchers exposed volunteers to a bright light for an hour during the middle of the night. The volunteers wore either the blue lenses or gray lenses. The researchers then compared the volunteers’ melatonin levels to their levels on a night with no light exposure. They found that the gray-lenses group had a 46% decline in melatonin, while the blue-lenses group had a slight increase in production. Other reports have found that the blue glasses reduce daytime sleepiness, depression, as well as pain from fibromyalgia. Kids with ADHD also experienced an improvement in symptoms.

So…you might experiment with these special blue light-blocking glasses for a month. If you don’t want to do that but you still want to get the benefits of melatonin, you can take a supplement with 3 mg of melatonin 30 minutes before bedtime.

The Importance Of Vitamin B12 To Keep Your Brain Young

About 40% of the US population is deficient in Vitamin B12. Recent research has shown that older people with low levels of Vitamin B12 are at increased risk for brain atrophy or shrinkage. Brain atrophy is associated with Alzheimer’s disease and impaired cognitive function.

This study, involving more than 100 volunteers aged 61 to 87, found that individuals with the lowest Vitamin B12 levels at the start of the study had a greater decrease in brain volume after five years. Those with the lowest levels of B12 had a six-fold greater rate of brain loss.

An important fact to note is that none of the participants were actually deficient in Vitamin B12, though they were in the low level of normal range.

As I said, since 40% of the population is actually deficient, this means the number of older people experiencing brain loss is probably much higher. It also means having a blood test that shows your B12 level is in the ‘normal range’ might not mean that you are at the level for optimum healthy brain functioning.

So…get your Vitamin B12 level checked by your doctor and make sure you aim to keep it at the higher end of the normal range.

Got Asthma? Get Checked On How You Use Your Inhaler

A study reported in Prevention (February 2008) discovered that 33% of patients who use inhalers for asthma or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease are using them incorrectly.

By having their doctors demonstrate how to use it, the rate of misuse was cut by more than half.

So…if you use an inhaler, don’t assume you’re using it correctly. Get your technique checked out by your doc – see if you deserve the Gold Medal for proper inhalation technique.

Helping To Alleviate The Symptoms Of Parkinson’s Disease

Dr Julian Whitaker in his September newsletter talked about the use of Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) to reduce the symptoms of Parkinson’s disease, with  “astounding” results in some cases.

In HBOT a person is placed in a pressure chamber similar to the ones scuba divers use to decompress from the bends. HBOT floods the body with oxygen and stimulates the growth of new blood vessels that nourish the brain. It also promotes the regeneration of neurons while it slows the death of neurons in the region of the brain that Parkinson’s affects.

Dr. Whitaker reported that HBOT improved symptoms such as rigidity, posture, gait, tremors, speech and facial expressions, as well as the ability to carry out the activities of daily living. Dr. Whitaker also uses intravenous gluthathione in conjunction HBOT.

So…if you know someone with Parkinson’s, see if you can get them to a HBOT chamber. You can do a Google search to find out if there’s a chamber near you.

Cut The Need For Arthritis Drugs By Using Cod Liver Oil

Since I’m talking about arthritis, there was a study reported in Rheumatology (March 24, 2008) about the impact of taking cod liver oil once a day for relief of arthritis pain.

The researchers gave patients either 10 g of cod liver oil or a placebo daily. After 12 weeks they found that 39% of the patients on the cod liver oil were able to reduce the need for drugs versus 10% for the placebo group.

So… to better control your rheumatoid arthritis use your mind and use cod liver oil.

Stop Taking Antibiotics Before Common Dental Procedures

According to the American Medical Association, there is no proof that antibiotics taken before common dental procedures, including extractions, prevent heart infections by preventing bacteria from getting into the bloodstream.

Instead, the risks of side effects from the drugs and from your developing antibiotic resistance outweigh the benefits.

The only exceptions are for people who have already had heart infections (called endocarditis), have artificial heart valves, or other serious heart-related health problems.

So…if your dentist offers drugs (the antibiotic kind) and you don’t have any of those problems, say thank you, but no thank you.

Kids With ADHD React To Certain Food Additives & Preservatives

A study reported in The Lancet states that the symptoms of kids with ADHD worsened when they consumed foods having certain food colorings and preservatives in them.

Some of the culprits included the preservative sodium benzoate, tartrazine, quinoline yellow, and allura red AC.

All these are used in carbonated drinks, fruit juices, jams, pickles, candy, soft drinks, cereals, pastries, soups, gums and other processed foods.

So…if you haven’t been doing it, it’s time to read food labels and eliminate these substances for the health of your kids.

Drug & Herb Conflicts - (re: Heath Ledger)

One of my Reader's Writes About Drug And Herb Conflicts, Heath Ledger & My Blurb on St. John's Wort

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
After one of my earlier Teplitz Reports this year (March, 2008), reader Beth Terry wrote me about more drug and herb contraindications.

What she said was so good that I asked Beth if I could share some of it with readers.

She said yes.

“You opened a good discussion that didn't go far enough. You brought up the contraindications factors with St. John's Wort, but could have gone a little further.

Given the recent death of Heath Ledger, contraindicated drug combinations is an important topic. People think that because they bought an Over-the-Counter (OTC) medicine, it's safe to take with anything. "

Even though most mothers know about not giving kids aspirin in certain situations, a lot of people don't think about mixing medicines.

Though I'm a fan of homeopathic and complementary medicine, I know enough to look at Mindell's Herb Bible or Consumer Labs to see if I should be mixing it with anything else. (I swear by ConsumerLabs.com -- they are a rich resource for any kind of supplements or OTC meds. They just found that high numbers of pills containing Turmeric have high levels of lead. Good to have as a resource).

Here are some examples for people to watch out for:

   *  An OTC containing dextromethorphan or antihistamine can cause or increase drowsiness when combined with alcohol.

   * It may not be safe to take an OTC sleep medication if you are taking a prescription sedative or tranquilizer.

    * It may be dangerous to take an OTC that contains aspirin if you are taking a prescription blood thinner, or if you have diabetes or gout.”

If you’d like to know more about the effects of St. John’s Wort, Beth shared a link to http://nccam.nih.gov/health/stjohnswort .

Finally, Beth wrote “It is important to inform your health care providers about any herb or dietary supplement product that contains vitamins, minerals, herbs or other botanicals, amino acids, enzymes, and/or other ingredients intended to supplement the diet. This helps to ensure safe and coordinated care.”

Beth, I agree completely and thanks for taking the time to expand on this important topic. ~Jerry

Young Vegetarians

More Young People Are Becoming Vegetarians

An article in USA Today online reported that more kids aged 8 to 18 are vegetarians. The figure has grown to 3% of the population (About 3% of adults are vegetarian, while another 10% consider themselves vegetarian even though they may occasionally eat fish or chicken).

One of the plusses in this trend is that it is easier for the parents of these kids to find kid-friendly veggie staples, such as, soy milk, veggie broths, lard-free refried beans and veggie burgers.

Since I’ve been vegetarian since 1971, I’ve gotten to see this revolution take place in restaurants around the country. It used to be that when I was on the road and speaking in a small town, I needed to find one of the steak house chains like Bonanza or Ponderosa to eat in because I knew I could get their salad bar and a baked potato. Because almost all restaurants now offer veggie meals (and good ones, too), it’s been years since I’ve had to eat in one of the chains.

The article also cited many reasons why young people become vegetarian, including:
- personal taste,
- concerns about animal treatment,
- environmental questions surrounding the raising the livestock, and
- the influence of peers and celebrities.

To ease parents’ concerns about the nutritional wisdom of a young person becoming vegetarian, a 2003 review of the scientific literature by the American Dietetic Association concluded that a well-planned Vegan and other types of vegetarian diets can be appropriate for all ages.

  • So… please pass the soy burgers!  (and remembering the habits of the young - Fast Food Giant Burger King added a Vegetarian Burger to their menu, that is actually terrific tasting, and the Veggie at Subway is a big favorite!)

A Non-Chemical Way To Get Rid Of Fleas, Pests and Moles In Your Yard

There’s a great natural, non-chemical way to get rid of fleas and many other pests around your home in your backyard. It’s by using a tiny bug called a ...

... nematode.

This bug specializes in eating all kinds of grubs. In its earlier stage a flea is in the grub stage.

As soon as the nematodes finish eating all the grubs in your lawn, they will die. This will rid your property of all kinds of bugs as well as fleas!  (Moles love grubs, so when the grubs are gone, so are the moles!)

The nematodes come on a sponge and since they are microscopic, you’ll never see the millions of them there.

Just spread them on your lawn and let them do their work! To order the nematodes you can go to Yardiac, & search for "nematodes".

Stop Getting Catalogs And Save Some Trees

>Stop Getting Catalogs And Save Some Trees!!

It seems like the Post Office is mostly delivering bills and catalogs to our homes. Would you believe, 19 billion catalogs a year are shipped?

If you’re like me, you toss most of them and just browse a few. Yet each catalog represents trees that were cut down and energy expended in the paper-making, printing and shipping operations.

While a number of companies are now using recycled paper in their catalogs, there are too many catalogs going into landfills.

Now you can do something about it. There is a website, www.catalogchoice.org, where with just a few clicks you can stop unwanted catalogs from coming to your home or office.

Save your catalogs for about one month as you will need to enter the names of the ones you want to stop receiving. Just imagine the impact if we all eliminated just 25% of the catalogs coming to our mailboxes!

It's Mosquito Time – Defend Yourself Now!

It's Mosquito Time – Defend Yourself Now!

It's mosquito time again. Yes you can buy bug sprays, but do you really want that poison in or on your body?  Well there's a natural alternative available that I wrote about a couple of years ago in the Teplitz Report.

Since there are so many new subscribers to the newsletter, let me share the solution with you again. It's Vitamin B1. All you need to do is take 100 mg every six to eight hours when you are going to be outside.

The Army did the original research on this years ago. They sent two groups of soldiers out into the bush for two weeks. One group was given bug goop and the other group took Vitamin B1. When they came out of the bush, the group using the bug goop was covered with bug bites. The Vitamin B1 group had hardly any bites on them.

I went camping last summer with some friends who have hiked the Appalachian Trail. They were willing to use the Vitamin B1 and were surprised when they had no bites at all at the end of the weekend.

So give it a swallow and let me know how it works for you!  Email me and I will include your link on our Ezine Archive Page!

PS:  If you also have the need to spray, Avon's Expedition is BAR-NONE, YES!  It is the most natural of sprays, and does not even require washing after you've applied.  NATURAL and EFFECTIVE.

  • I've had subscribers tell me incredible stories - "It is like a barrier, even if there are thousands of mosquitoes around you, they WILL not penetrate the area around your body."
  • I'm not sure why, from a technical standpoint, at this point, I only know that it works - where friends are sitting out and none are bit!  So add Vitamin B1 to your daily regimen (many additional benefits), and if you want Xtra protection, you can now order online and have Avon deliver Expedition directly to you, ...

Women's Stress & Oxytocin

WOMEN EXPERIENCE STRESS DIFFERENTLY

Prevention magazine reported a study of women and their response to stress.

Seems there's a chemical released when women are under stress called oxytocin.

It actually encourages the woman to tend children and gather with other women. When she does tend and gather, even more oxytocin is released which continues to counter stress effects and also produces a calming effect.

My suggestion for women when stress hits  - show your boyfriend or husband this blurb and head to your support network of female friends.

HAY FEVER SEASON & Vitamin C, Vegetarian Diet

I've had uncontrollable hay fever ever since I was six years old. I had weekly shots for 9 years and took two pills every day of the season. It was still not completely controlled.

Thirty years ago I became a vegetarian because a friend told me meat produces histamine in the body and when you have hay fever you take anti-histamine pills.

Well, was I amazed at the change. My suffering went way down. A couple of years later I discovered that Vitamin C in mega doses acted as an anti-histamine with no side effects. Well, I was further amazed at the change.

So here are some things you might want to do if you do have allergies:

1. Just before and during the hay fever season eat vegetarian style.

2. Start taking 2000 mg of Vitamin C (spread the dose over the day, or order time-released versions here: Swanson First Time Customer Coupon - $5.00 Off ).

When your hay fever hits, take about 500 to 1,000 mg of Vitamin C every 5 to 10 minutes. At some point your hay fever symptoms will stop. If they start again, keep taking the C as I described.

You don't have to be concerned about taking too much Vitamin C for several reasons. First, it gets used up immediately whenever the body is under stress and a hay fever attack is an attack. Second, Vitamin C is water-soluble so it doesn't collect in the body. Third if you do take too much Vitamin C, you can get diarrhea so just reduce the dosage.

In 30 years of doing this I've never had a problem with C.

How Valid Are Medical Treatments

How Valid Are Medical Treatments

I’ll sometimes receive feedback from readers about the lack of research on some of the things that I recommend. These same people will trust that what the medical profession is saying is a recommended treatment MUST be valid. Well, get ready to have that bubble popped.

Only 15% of current medical treatments have been proven by a controlled clinical trial. This fact has been validated by the US Government’s Office of Technology Assessment and Duke University Research Sciences.

Let’s examine the treatment for glaucoma, for example. Dr. David Eddy, a cardiologist, attempted to discover where the current treatment for glaucoma originated. He searched back to 1906 and could not find a single controlled study conducted that validated the recommended treatment. Rather, the entire treatment was just handed down from generation to generation. Dr. Eddy found the same problem, that there were no controlled studies, for treatment of blocked femoral and popliteal arteries. He even found that standard practices often do not match whatever research that does exist.

Dr. Cindy Romero reports that if one were to look at the Physician’s Desk Reference, which is the bible for drug information, one would find a significant number of drugs for which the mechanism of action is “unknown.” While there will be speculation as to how the drug is working, there will also be a list of known side effects from using the drug.

My approach is to give you as much research as I can and to make recommendations that will either do no harm or point out the known warnings. When you compare my healthy living recommendations to the numbers of drugs in the marketplace that have been withdrawn due to dangerous side effects, I think you’ll better understand the wisdom of my approach.

Chia Seeds - Get More Omega 3 & 6 Into Your Diet

>Chia Seeds - The Easy Way To Get More Omega 3 and 6 Into Your Diet

Until recently, the only good choice for getting a vegetable source of Omega 3 and 6 into your diet was using flax seeds.

Chia seeds are an even better choice for getting extra Omega 3 and 6 fatty acids, which are the good fats that you need in your diet. These seeds have a higher amount of Omega’s than any other plant. They also have 38% more fiber and 247% more calcium (that number is not an error) than flax seeds.

While flax seeds can go rancid, you don’t have that problem with Chia seeds (I’m also talking about Chia seeds that you eat and not the Chia Pet grass that grows from seeds).

I’ve been sprinkling Chia seeds on my morning cereal for six months now and am pleased with the ease of using them. It doesn’t change the taste of the cereal at all. It just adds a little crunch.

The Right Grains Are Good For Your Heart

The Right Grains Are Good For Your Heart

You may have read recent reports stating that staying away from wheat products may be beneficial to your health. The part that’s usually missing in this advice is for you to stay away from enriched wheat products verse whole wheat products.

A study reported in the online journal Nutrition, Metabolism & Cardiovascular Diseases analyzed seven studies involving more than 285,000 participants. The study found that eating 2 1/2 slices of whole wheat bread each day reduced risk of a heart attack by 20%.

Be careful when reading the labels of products. Manufacturers can be sneaky by putting words like Spring Wheat or Spring Wheat White Bread in the list of ingredients. They will also contain Whole Wheat when they just put some whole wheat flour in the product, while most of the rest is enriched flour. The simple way is to look for 100% Whole Wheat on the label.

Also, don’t forget that when you are eating rice to make sure it is brown rice and not white or enriched white rice. (Reported Prevention October 2007)

The Power Of Creating Marine Reserves

In an interview with Elizabeth Kolbert published in OnEarth, Kolbert talked about the power of setting aside marine reserves to restore habitats and fisheries. In marine reserves, all the fish and other sea life get bigger since no fishing is allowed.

What this means is that these larger individuals live longer and have more young. As an example, a 14-inch vermilion rockfish will generate about 150,000 young. Let it grow to 24 inches and it will generate 1.7 million babies! If this was a financial investment, that would be quite a return! Come to think of it, it is an investment – an investment in our collective future!

The Australians have even turned a third of the Great Barrier Reef into a reserve network. South Africa has decided to set aside a quarter of its coastline in reserves. In the US we have only set aside 1 percent of our coastal waters in reserves.

One way to save our fish species is to support the establishment of more coastline reserves.

New Hope For Preventing ALS (Lou Gehrig’s Disease)

ALS is a devastating disease that quickly and aggressively kills neurons controlling voluntary muscle movement.

Researchers at the University Medical Center, Utrecht and Wageningen University, Netherlands, compared the diets of 132 ALS patients and 220 control subjects.

The ALS patients showed significantly less Omega 3 and 6 fatty acids and Vitamin E in their diets. The researchers think that this lack in the diet may possibly make them more susceptible to ALS.

The researchers’ findings indicate that Omega 3 and 6 fatty acids and Vitamin E protect our neurons, making people who regularly consume them 50 to 60% less vulnerable to ALS than those who don’t. Reported in Natural Solutions.

Are People Living Longer Going To Strain The Economy?

>Are People Living Longer Going To Strain The Economy?

Appears that the answer is no.

According to a research study by the AARP, the cost of entitlement programs, such as social security, Medicare and Medicaid, have remained remarkably steady as a percentage of the gross domestic product.

It is even a smaller percentage today than when Ronald Reagan became president 26 years ago.

The researchers found that the real problem is out-of-control health care costs. These increasing costs are due in large measure to advances in medical technology. The AARP’s position is that we have to make the health care system more effective, efficient and affordable, and it has to be done now.

There were recent reports in the media about a study that found that taking Vitamins C and E caused a higher risk of death. In the Danish study researchers reported a 4 to 7 increase in death risk in those taking the vitamins.

According to Jeffrey Blumberg, Ph.D., director of the antioxidants research lab at Tufts University in Boston, the methodology was flawed since most of the people in the study were already very ill.

Blumberg also said that hundreds of studies have been conducted showing the safety of Vitamins C & E.

So…I’m still taking mine.

Oxygen therapies may ease headache pain

Oxygen therapies may ease headache pain

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - Two forms of oxygen therapy may help manage two types of debilitating headache pain, a new research review suggests.

In a review of nine small clinical trials, the researchers found that hyperbaric oxygen therapy showed promise for halting pain during migraine attacks. A similar treatment -- normobaric, or normal-pressure, oxygen therapy -- eased pain in people suffering from cluster headaches.

The findings are published in the Cochrane Library, a publication of the Cochrane Collaboration, an international organization that evaluates medical research.

Both migraines and cluster headaches can be debilitating. Migraines typically cause throbbing pain in one area of the head, often accompanied by nausea, vomiting or sensitivity to light and sound.

Cluster headaches cause sharp pain on one side of the head, including the eye; that lasts anywhere from 15 minutes to a few hours and come in waves -- repeated attacks over a few weeks to months, followed by a period of no symptoms.

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy involves breathing pure oxygen in a sealed, pressurized chamber. With normobaric oxygen therapy, patients breathe pure oxygen from a portable unit under normal conditions.

Normal-pressure oxygen has long been used for severe headache pain, and there is some evidence that hyperbaric oxygen could be helpful, but few controlled clinical trials have evaluated the therapies.

For the current study, researchers were able to find nine clinical trials performed between 1981 and 2004 involving a total of 201 patients. When they combined data from three, they found that hyperbaric oxygen therapy was six times more likely to relieve migraine pain than a "sham" (placebo) therapy used for comparison.

Similarly, one study showed that normal-pressure oxygen outperformed sham therapy in easing cluster headache pain. Another trial found the therapy to be effective, but not better than the medication ergotamine.

None of the two forms of oxygen therapy prevented future headache attacks, however, lead researcher Dr. Michael H. Bennett, of Prince of Wales Hospital in Randwick, Australia, told Reuters Health.

He said that based on the evidence, people with cluster headaches who are not finding quick or complete relief from their medication could ask their doctor about normobaric oxygen therapy.

Hyperbaric oxygen could be an option for stubborn migraine pain, according to Bennett, but it may not be all that practical.

"Unfortunately, this treatment will be relatively expensive and may not be covered by medical insurance or provided by local medical services," he said. "It is likely that hyperbaric oxygen will only be used in the very worst cases where relief is not obtained by any alternative method."

Exactly why oxygen therapy works is not entirely clear. Bennett noted that migraines involve blood vessel dilation in the head, and hyperbaric oxygen causes vessels to constrict, which may help explain the pain reduction. There is also evidence that hyperbaric oxygen blocks the "chemical pathways" that lead people to feel migraine pain, he explained.

As for cluster headaches, they are associated with altered activity in certain brain areas. "In general," Bennett explained, "oxygen seems to return the activity of these areas to normal, and may be directly responsible for the effect of oxygen on the headache."

It's Here In 2008: Genetically Engineered Sugar

American Crystal, a Wyoming-based sugar company, has announced, along with several other leading US sugar providers, that they will be releasing sugar from genetically engineered (GE) sugar beets to stores in 2008.

Like other GE products, the GE sugar will not be labeled at all. Since half of the granulated sugar in the US comes from sugar beets, this means another source of GE ingredients is being unknowingly inserted into our food products.

By the way, the European Union has not approved GE beets for human consumption. Isn’t it better for us to play it safe than to allow our food supply potentially to be contaminated by GE beets?

Shiatsu and Lower Back Pain Study

A study published in the Journal of Holistic Nursing again validates the impact of Shiatsu on lower back pain.

In the study, 66 people, who complained of lower back pain, received four Shiatsu treatments. After each treatment, the subjects were called and asked to quantify the level of pain. The researchers found that both pain and anxiety decreased significantly over time.

Drug Side-Effects Are Robbing The Body of Nutrients

You may not be aware that many prescription drugs affect the way our bodies absorb and use essential nutrients.  Analyzing four categories of common drugs for correlations to the loss of nutrients reveals the following potential deficiencies and what supplement to take to avoid the deficiency:

  • Statins, which lower cholesterol, deplete Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) – Take 30 to 60 mg daily

  • Vasodilators for high blood pressure deplete Vitamin B6 – Take 2 mg daily

  • Beta-blockers for high blood pressure deplete CoQ10 – Take 30 to 60 mg daily

  • Diuretics for hypertension or congestive heart failure deplete magnesium, potassium and zinc – Take up to 400 mg of magnesium, 8 mg of zinc and 3,500 mg of potassium

  • Hormone therapies such as birth control pills deplete Vitamin B6, Vitamin C, folic acid, magnesium, zinc – Take 2 mg B6, 75 mg of Vitamin C, 400 mcg of folic acid, 400 mg of magnesium and 8 mg of zinc.

If your doctor prescribes any of these drugs be sure to ask about the wisdom of taking these recommended supplements to offset the potential nutrient depletion from the drugs.

Another Study on Vinegar & Diabetes

Using Vinegar To Help Control Diabetes

A study published in Diabetes Care showed that vinegar could dramatically reduce the spike in blood sugars that diabetics experience after eating a meal.

In this study the researchers gave a group of people two tablespoons of vinegar just before a meal.  Next, they measured their blood sugar levels an hour later. The group had an average drop of 25% in blood sugar levels after the meal when they took the vinegar.

People who were highly prone to becoming diabetics had an even greater drop in their blood sugar spike. It dropped nearly 50%.

So…if you are a type 1 or type 2 diabetic, or prediabetic, start taking a vinegar appetizer right before a meal.

MSG May Be More Dangerous To Our Health Than We Thought

no-MSG_s Years ago MSG (monosodium glutamate), which is a flavor enhancer, got connected with Chinese food. Chinese chefs were using a lot of it in cooking and customers were getting headaches after eating this MSG-laced food. It was even called Chinese headache Syndrome. Now when people go to a Chinese restaurant, many will say “No MSG please” when ordering.

While that is good to do, you may not be aware that MSG is put into thousands of foods from soup to crackers to meats. It’s even in infant formulas and baby foods. It’s hidden under on the ingredients label by being called a lot of different names, such as, broth, casein, Hydrolyzed Vegetable Protein (HVP), autolyzed gelatin, yeast extract, malted barley, rice syrup and brown rice syrup. If you’re like me, you are suddenly realizing how the food industry has been deceiving us into eating more MSG.

MSG, according to Dr. Russell Blaylock in his book Excitotoxins: The Taste That Kills, goes beyond just giving consumers headaches. It may actually be poisoning us. Dr. Blaylock explains that MSG is an excitotoxin, which means it overexcites your cells to the point of damaging them. This makes it act as a poison.

In addition, since the 1960s, scientists have known that MSG causes obesity. In case you haven’t looked around, we are in the middle of an obesity epidemic. MSG causes the production of visceral fat, which surrounds your organs, and increases your risk of heart attack, stroke, insomnia, and type-2 diabetics.

So…read those labels. It’s the only way you can finish what you started in the Chinese restaurant by saying “No MSG please.”

And for a list of known products containing "hidden" MSG, check out and support the Truth In Labeling Project:  "If MSG isn't Harmful, Why is it Hidden?" report.

PTSD common in chronic migraine sufferers

May 7, 2008

PTSD common in chronic migraine sufferers

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is more common in people who suffer from chronic migraine headache than in those with episodic migraine headache, research suggests.

"Recent data suggest that PTSD may be more common in headache sufferers than in the general population," Dr. B. Lee Peterlin, of Drexel University College of Medicine, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and colleagues note in the journal Headache.

They assessed the relative frequency of PTSD in 32 patients with episodic migraine and 28 with chronic migraine. People with chronic migraine typically have headaches on 15 or more days a month, while people with episodic migraine have fewer than 15 days of headache per month.

Peterlin and colleagues report that significantly more subjects with chronic migraine than with episodic migraine had a history of depression (54 percent versus 22 percent).

There was no significant difference in the percentage of subjects who reported at least one significant traumatic life event (78 percent of episodic migraine patients and 79 percent of chronic migraine patients). The groups did not differ in terms of the average number of traumatic life events reported.

However, the frequency of PTSD was significantly greater in the chronic migraine group than in the episodic group (43 percent versus 9.5 percent). This remained significant after adjusting for depression and other factors that might influence the results.

PTSD may be a risk factor for chronic migraine headache, Peterlin and colleagues conclude.

"As a previous study has suggested that PTSD treatment alone can positively influence chronic pain conditions and disability," they add, "one of the implications of this study is that there should be greater consideration for the evaluation of PTSD in chronic migraine patients, as well as for the use of cognitive/behavioral therapy (alone or in combination with drug therapy) in this subgroup of headache sufferers."
