Should You Trust Stock Portfolio Managers?

portfolio Interesting question with what’s been going on in the economy.

In an article in FastCompany March 2010, Dan Macsai reported that more than half of all portfolio managers tracked by Morningstar (a rating agency) didn’t invest in their own funds during the past five years.

As Dan Carroll, founder of KaChing, said, “How are customers supposed to trust someone who appears to not even trusthimself?”

KaChing is actually set-up so you can discover this information. Check it out.

Stopping The Pain With Spinal Cord Stimulation

scs2 While it’s been around since the 1960s, spinal cord stimulation (SCS) also known as neurostimulation, is a way to control spinal pain.

The technology has been improving and is now an FDA approved way both to reduce pain and also to improve functional ability and quality of life.

SCS gives patients who cannot have surgery an alternative. In fact, for some patients, SCS can be more effective than repeated surgery.

SCS can even reduce the need for medications, which means there are no side effects to be concerned about.

To find out if SCS is a good option for you, consult a physician who is knowledgeable about both chronic pain and SCS therapy.

So…I would recommend exploring SCS therapy before going through back surgery.

For lower back pain, be sure to see this: Shiatsu for Back Pain

Obesity And How Close You Live To A Fast Food Restaurant

fastrestaurants Who would have thought that how close you live to a fast food restaurant can lead to a child being obese.

A study conducted by the College of William and Mary was published in the International Journal of Pediatric Obesity.

The researchers recorded personal information on 2,000 children and mapped their homes in relation to fast food restaurants in the vicinity.

The researchers observed that children who live within a quarter to a tenth of a mile of a fast food restaurant had a higher BMI (body mass index) and were more likely to be obese.

So…if you’ve got kids and you’re close to a fast foods restaurant, you’ll need to be more vigilant as to where your kids are eating.

Three Steps To Help Kids Control Obesity

kidsweight A study published in Pediatrics found three factors that had a significant impact on a child’s weight.

These factors were simple things: eating dinner as a family, getting enough sleep, and watching fewer than two hours of TV or videos a day on weekdays.

Of the more than 8,000 preschoolers involved in the study, those families that followed all three factors were 40% less likely to become obese.

So… for many kids there’s an easy way to keep their weight down.

Tea + Exercise + Vitamin D Can Stop Dementia

Three studies were presented at the Alzheimer’s Association International Conference, all reporting a reduction in the risk of brain decline by doing physical activity by regular tea drinking or adequate Vitamin D.

The study on exercise tracked more than 1200 elderly people over 20 years. It found that 242 developed dementia. Participants who performed moderate to heavy levels of physical activity had a 40% lower risk of developing any type of dementia. Those who reported the least amount of activity were 45% more likely to develop dementia.

The study on tea drinkers included 4800 men and women 65 and older. The participants were followed for 14 years. Those who drank tea one to four times a week had an average rate of decline 37% lower than people who didn’t drink tea.

The study on Vitamin D looked at 3325 US adults aged 65 and older. For those deficient in Vitamin D the risk of cognitive impairment increased about 42%. For those severely deficient in Vitamin D, the risk increased 394%.

These are great ways to stop dementia in its tracks. So…take some Vitamin D with tea and move your body.

Drinking Tea Can Improve Mental Focus

teamemory Dutch researchers asked volunteers to perform tasks designed to test their attention before, 10 minutes after and an hour after drinking a beverage that contained the two most active ingredients in tea.

The tea drinkers scored significantly better than the controls. The two compounds that had this impact were caffeine and L-theanine.

While caffeine can make some people jumpy, L-theanine doesn’t have that effect. L-theanine improved concentration by rapidly increasing the activity of alpha waves in the brain while boosting the levels of GABA, a neurotransmitter that calms the brain and relieves anxiety. You can get the benefit of L-theanine by drinking tea or taking a supplement with Suntheanine.

So…tea anyone?

A Better Way To Exercise: Do Interval Training

intervaltraining How would you like to reduce that hour a day of exercise to 20 minutes, whether you’re a kid, teenager or adult? Well, according to a study published in The Journal of Physiology, you can do just that by doing interval training exercise. To do this, you alternate high intensity training with a lower level of exercise.

As an example, if you are on a stationary bike, you’d pedal at the highest intensity you can do for a minute and then pedal slowly for a minute. At 20 minutes – STOP YOU’RE DONE! The researchers found that the men in the study received the same benefits as they would have had they exercised at a lower intensity for an hour or more.

A separate study of women found that those who exercised for 20 minutes, alternating 8 seconds of sprinting on a bike with 12 seconds of light pedaling, 3 times a week for 15 weeks, lost three times as much fat as the women who exercised at a regular pace for 40 minutes.

I Would Appreciate Your Help

ezinePoll-Manage-Raft copy If you have been reading the last several issues of my Teplitz Email Report, then you know that my two new books have been released – Managing Your Stress in Difficult Times: Succeeding in Times of Change and Switched-On Selling: Balance Your Brain For Sales Success.

I would like to ask for your help in promoting them to your friends and colleagues. If you Twitter, are on Facebook or have a Blog, I’d appreciate if you’d mention the books on them.

If you are comfortable doing this, you could simply say something like – “I have been reading Dr. Jerry Teplitz’ monthly email report and have been impressed with the quality of the information. I understand he has just released two new books Managing Your Stress in Difficult Times: Succeeding in Times of Change and Switched-On Selling: Balance Your Brain For Sales Success. Assuming these books are of similar quality to his Reports, then these books are ‘must’ reading.”

Whatever you say, so long as it’s positive, :) ) would be appreciated. Would you also please direct them to Amazon.com to purchase one or both books?

Magnesium – The Powerful Healer

magnesium The mineral magnesium is a powerful therapeutic healer. It has the capability to smooth out irregular heartbeats, save lives after heart attacks, lower blood pressure, halt asthma attacks, prevent diabetes and its complications, and improve sleep and endurance.

Let me give you some examples of the research supporting many of these benefits.

1. A double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial found that administering IV magnesium sulfate to 2,000 patients within 24 hours of a heart attack resulted in 24% fewer deaths. Following up on these patients for one to five years later, the researchers additionally discovered that the patients initially treated with magnesium had a cardiovascular death rate 21% lower than those who did not receive the magnesium.

2. A Korean study found that patients with hypertension who took 300 mg of magnesium daily for three months lowered their systolic/diastolic blood pressure 17.1 and 6.7 mmHG. The researchers also found that for every dose increase of 240 mg of magnesium the patient was taking, the patient’s blood pressure dropped another 4.3 and 2.3 mmHG. These numbers mean an enormous drop in the risk of having a stroke or a heart attack.

3. On the use of magnesium for stopping an acute asthma attack, an interesting survey was conducted of emergency room doctors in 2006. This survey found that even though the majority of the docs knew about the research supporting using magnesium for asthma only 2.5% of the patients having an acute asthma attack were treated with IV magnesium. So…if you or a loved one has an acute asthma attack, question the doc as to why IV magnesium is not being used.

4. A review of studies found that for every 100 mg increase in the daily intake of magnesium there was a 15% decrease in the risk of developing type-2 diabetes. Taking magnesium is important for type-2 diabetics because increased urination causes the loss of water-soluble nutrients. Low levels of magnesium may cause severe diabetic retinopathy.

How much magnesium should you be taking? Dr. Julian Whitaker recommends 400 to 1000 mg daily. Since large amounts of magnesium can cause diarrhea, build up your dose gradually.

Sorbet May Not Be As Healthy As You’d Think

sorbet I’ve always thought that sorbet was good for you since it contains fruit and is low in fat. Well, it turns out I’m wrong.

Store-bought sorbet is often loaded with sweeteners, including high-fructose corn syrup which is definitely not good for you.

In addition, the sorbet may contain “natural flavors” which are chemically processed from fruits and even meats…and me being a vegetarian, too! Sorbet, anyone?

FedEx Develops A System To Track Donor Organs

fedex Federal Express recently got FAA approval for a unique system, SenseAware, to track sensor data and events during the shipment of critically sensitive packages, such as donor organs.

In addition to their regular location tracking data, FedEx is now able to track temperature, light and other vital information about heart valves, knee implants and other organs.

The service uses light and temperature signals to notify recipients if a package has been opened or otherwise spoiled before it gets to its intended destination.

Combining Green Ideas

A reader of OnEarth, Charles J. Cole, wrote a letter to the editor that I thought had some great ideas. He suggested that when we focus on developing renewable energy that we need to use a multipronged approach for conservation. He then gave examples of this approach and I thought one was brilliant.

He’s from Tucson, Arizona, where he’s found that some people are starting to use rainwater for various uses and others are setting up large arrays of solar panels. His idea is to put gutters on solar panels and pipe off the rain into storage areas.

He’s figured since water is scarce in Tucson, which only gets about 12 inches of rain a year, a square mile of solar panels could collect over 208 million gallons of water.

Pretty cool idea!

Combining Vitamin D With Curcumin May Affect Brain Health

curcumin I’ve written many times about the benefits of Vitamin D3 and curcumin. Now researchers are combining the two as a way to boost the body’s immune system and also help clear protein plaques out of the brain that are linked to Alzheimer’s Disease.

The researchers in this study, published in the Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease, took blood samples from nine Alzheimer’s disease patients and treated them with Vitamin D and curcumin. The researchers found that the curcumin enhanced the binding of beta-amyloids to macrophages, which are the scavengers of our immune system. The Vitamin D could then strongly stimulate the uptake and absorption of the beta-amyloids by the macrophages.

While this is early-stage research, it’s got exciting potential.

Carnosine May Help Prevent Cataracts

A study published in the journal Biochemistry reported that carnosine, which is an amino acid, may help to prevent or even treat cataracts.

The researchers looked at the tissue cultures of rat lenses and found that carnosine could help prevent cloudiness on eye lenses and could also restore clarity to clouded lenses. In their research, the cultures treated with carnosine developed 50 to 60% less cloudiness. It also restored most of the clarity to clouded lenses.

So…even though this was research done on rats, if you are experiencing cloudiness on your eye lens, you might want to experiment with taking l-carnosine.

Using Baking Soda To Prevent Kidney Disease

bakingsoda2 With the increase in diabetes to epidemic proportions, one of the negative outcomes will be more people suffering from chronic kidney disease (CKD) and metabolic acidosis. Well, there’s a treatment option that you would have never guessed is making an impact – it’s baking soda!

British researchers followed 134 patients with advanced CKD and metabolic acidosis. Along with their regular medical treatment, half the patients took daily tablets of baking soda. After two years, the rate of decline in the group taking baking soda was two-thirds slower than the standard care group and their overall nutritional status improved.

This slowing of the progression of the disease will have an enormous impact on the patient’s quality of life. Since these people suffered from advanced CKD, it will be interesting to see if researchers take a look at the impact baking soda will have on people just developing CKD.

Paying Attention To Feelings Versus Your Head

heart-head The question is: Is it better to pay attention to your reasoning skills or your feelings?  This is an old debate that just got some new insights. A researcher at the University of Toronto had his test subjects interact with an anonymous partner.

The subjects had two options from which to choose – they could treat the other person fairly or lie to them. If they lied, they would gain at the expense of their partners.

Before the subjects decided to be fair or to cheat, they were encouraged either to think rationally about the situation and to ignore their emotions or they were told to make their decision based on their gut feelings. Sixty-nine percent of those who were told to be rational decided to lie to their partners while those only 27% of those who were told to go with their gut feelings lied.

With the economic crisis we’ve all been going through, it seems that using our gut feelings got lost in the ‘rational’ thought of “everyone else is doing it so I should, too.” If I could buy a house by exaggerating my income, I may as well do it. If I knew the homeowner wasn’t qualified, but I could profit by giving him a loan anyway, I may as well do it. If I could bundle these useless securities so that no one would know that they were valueless and sell them, why not.

All of these were ‘rational’ thoughts and they almost created a depression! One person who was using her gut was a woman, Sheila Bair, head of the FDIC. In 2008, she was warning bankers that there was a huge problem with mortgages and that the banks should renegotiate entire categories of loans to avoid massive foreclosures.

So what did these rationally minded bankers do - they ignored her. So…maybe when the alarm bells in your gut go off, you’ll start to give them more credit and pay attention.

Natural Ways To Fight Osteoarthritis

osteoarthritis2 Research published in Advances in Therapy found that giving study participants 1500 mg of glucosamine sulfate and 200 mg of omega-3 fats resulted in a 20 percent reduction in pain reported to researchers. While glucosamine was effective by itself, combining it with omega-3s really increased its effectiveness. Adding these nutrients together, prevented cartilage degeneration that occurs with osteoarthritis.

Another supplement to explore for relief from osteoarthritis is MSM (methylsulfonylmethane). It can help with arthritis, muscle soreness, shingles and many other painful conditions. In one study of arthritis sufferers reported by Raymond Francis, one group took 2,250 mg of MSM per day. They experienced an 80% reduction in pain over a 6 week period.

Yet another study compared groups taking 1500 mg per day of glucosamine, 1500 mg of MSM or the two together. At the end of 12 weeks, the glucosamine group experienced a 63% reduction in their pain. The MSM group’s pain levels dropped 52% and the group taking both nutrients experienced a 79% reduction in their pain. In addition, the combination group experienced quicker relief in both their pain and inflammation levels.

Keep in mind, you want to take chondroitin with glucosamine, msm and omega-3s.

Kids Brains Are Impacted Just By Seeing Domestic Violence

harvard1 Researchers at Harvard and Kumamoto Universities found that children aged 3 to 17 years old who saw severe domestic physical violence at home showed reduced development of the visual cortex in the right hemisphere of the brain by an average of 20.5%.

The visual cortex is where information from our eyes is processed. This means that the child may not process clearly what is going on in their environment.

Some other research I read several years ago talked about how children, whose mothers experienced major stress while the baby was in the womb, experienced greater growth at the brain stem. This is where the fight or flight response originates. Children whose mothers experienced a calm pregnancy experienced greater growth in the front part of the brain where higher reasoning is located.

This study on domestic violence further reinforces that our environment affects the way our brain develops.

A Brain Might Not Be Necessary..

brain In his Schwartz Report Stephan Schwartz tells the story of a young woman who was a cheerleader, an honor student and about to go to Brown University when she was in a terrible car accident.

When the doctors opened her skull to relieve pressure, they were stunned to discover that instead of a brain, the cavity contained only a sack of fluid.

Dr. John Lorber, a neurology professor at the University of Sheffield, reported performing a CAT-scan that showed no brain in the skull of an academically bright student with a high IQ.

Instead Lorber found a small piece of brain tissue covering the top of his spinal column.

This is not unusual according to Lorber, who identified several hundred people who appeared normal but had very small brains.

Even the medical journal The Lancet has published an MRI of a 44-year-old man with very little brain tissue.

So…all of this raises a number of interesting questions, the most prominent being “Do I need my brain and what does it do anyway?”

After applying the ointment to sore spots for 5 days, 95% of the participants reported improvement as compared with 38% of the placebo group.

Women Can Wear High Heels Without The Pain

heels Researchers at Schering-Plough Healthcare Products have developed an insole to prevent foot pain in women who wear high-heels.

What the insole does is shift the woman’s weight back on the heel and off the front of the foot, which is where women have their foot pain.

Check out Dr. Scholl’s for Her High Heel Insole.

Interestingly, the researchers also found out that insoles can also provide pain relief for osteoarthritis in the back, hips and knees.

Facebook-Twitter: Having Meaningful Relationships Has Gotten Harder.

relationships According to research done by Kodak, while it’s easier to say in touch with family and friends using email, texting, and sites like Facebook - the contacts may be less meaningful.

As a matter of fact, Kodak researchers found that 60% of the respondents felt like they have fewer meaningful relationships now.

What Time You Go To Sleep May Affect Your Level Of Depression

time Brazilian researchers found that people who go to sleep late at night are nearly 3 times more likely to experience depression symptoms than people who go to sleep early and wake up early.

The researchers speculated that there may be an optimal time to fall asleep and to wake up.

My guess is that this may be accurate since it is only a relatively short period of time that we’ve had electricity which has allowed us to stay up far later into the night than our ancestors who had no electricity.

Staying Focused Is Another Reason To Eat Dark Chocolate – Yummy!

When adults consumed a drink containing this amount of cocoa, they reported less mental fatigue.

Using Alternative Therapies To Get Relief From Cancer

Cassileth Dr. Barrie R. Cassileth, Chief of Integrative Medicine Service at Memorial Sloan-Kettering, has some interesting recommendations for the use of alternative therapies to reduce the unwanted side-effects from cancer drug treatments and improve a cancer patient’s quality of life.

Here they are:

  1. Use acupuncture to relieve nausea caused by chemotherapy.

  2. For patients with head and neck cancers whose salivary glands were destroyed by radiation treatments, use acupuncture.

  3. Use self-hypnosis to ease the severe hot flashes that plague women battling breast cancer.

  4. Join support groups to improve quality of life and increase survival time for cancer patients.

  5. Use massage and meditation to reduce stress, which may help the body in its fight against cancer.

CONTAGIOUS STRESS

by Keith Wilhelm

quotes3 Yes. Stress is contagious. Just ask my wife.

What it would be like to come home every day to a grumpy spouse. I used to do this to my spouse. Then I began to notice that she was beginning to become grumpy also. My stress was beginning to affect her. She had finally caught my contagions stress. She was now a grumpy woman.

I am proud to say that if you learn to be stress hardy you can have a much better life. We did and because of it we have now been married for over thirty happy years. We have learned how to deal with our stress together and individually.

Stress can be caught from anyone unless you become stress hardy. This is the process of building yourself up to resist the negative effects of a stressed out person.

You too can learn to deal with your stress and enjoy a happier life because of it.

10steps

Here are some tips for developing stress hardiness.

Ten Steps For Stress Hardiness.

1.
Know that stress hardiness begins with you. Learn to deal with your stress problems and you will be much happier. The happier you are, the harder it is for someone else to cause you stress.

2. Take care of yourself physically. Try this test. Stay up late for a few days and work overtime everyday. Now notice how tired you are, and how hard it is to deal with trouble. What you eat is also very important. A great comparison is putting bad fuel in your fancy vehicle. If you do this it will let you down, run bad and die. Like wise, if you put bad food in your system, your body will give you poor performance and eventually you will die.

3. Counting your blessings. Most of you have heard this before. Well, that is because it works. Begin and end your day by being thankful for what you have and your days will be blessed with feelings of gratefulness.

4. Plan your day. This great little secret will save you enough time in your day to do the important things you need to do for yourself. A plan will help keep you focused and going in the right direction. Don¡¯t forget to plan out of your day things you don¡¯t need to do or can be done by someone else.

5. Start your day off with some peppy, bubbly music. First thing in the morning I like to listen to music that peps me up and gets me going. It¡¯s better than coffee and the only side effects are the bubbly feelings inside. You might find yourself dancing on your way to work.

6. Get involved with helping others. This is the best way to get your mind off your problems. This tip makes you a real blessing to others because we are our brothers¡¯ keepers.

7. Sometimes life deals out a situation that we won¡¯t know how to deal with. Get help from someone before it gets out of hand.

8. Build someone up everyday. Tell them they are great. Say hi and smile to everyone you meet. Spread as many blessings as you can. The reward is unbelievable.

9. Do something for yourself. Start a hobby. I took up drumming and meet some wonderful people in the process. On drumming nights I sleep like a baby and feel great the next day.

Can You Trust Your Doctor’s Recommendations?

trustdoctor While heart disease is among the most studied of illnesses, the Wall Street Journal reported that only 11% of more than 2,700 recommendations approved by conventional cardiologists for treating heart patients were supported by high-quality scientific testing.

Because treatment decisions are often made very forcefully by the doctor, the patient is convinced that the doctor knows what he/she is talking about.

According to Harlan Krumholz, a cardiologist at Yale University School of Medicine, doctors should disclose to patients the strength of the evidence behind the care they recommend.

Migraines: Dilation/Constriction of Blood Vessels

A migraine begins when, for some reason, blood vessels in the brain constrict temporarily. When that happens, the amount of blood and oxygen flowing to the brain drops. So the brain sends a message: "Hey guys, we need some more blood and oxygen here!"

That causes other blood vessels to dilate. When those blood vessels expand, they become inflamed, throb, and cause the pounding pain. Because it involves changes in blood vessels, a migraine is a referred to as a vascular headache.

Vascular theory

Cortical_spreading_depression Migraines begin when blood vessels in the brain contract and expand inappropriately. This may start in the occipital lobe, in the back of the brain, as arteries spasm. The reduced flow of blood from the occipital lobe triggers the aura that some individuals who have migraines experience because the visual cortex is in the occipital area.

When the constriction stops and the blood vessels dilate, they become too wide. The once solid walls of the blood vessels become permeable and some fluid leaks out. This leakage is recognized by pain receptors in the blood vessels of surrounding tissue. In response, the body supplies the area with chemicals which cause inflammation. With each heart beat, blood passes through this sensitive area causing a throb of pain.

The vascular theory of migraines is now seen as secondary to brain dysfunction.

Serotonin and Blood Vessels

Serotonin is a type of neurotransmitter, or "communication chemical" which passes messages between nerve cells. It helps to control mood, pain sensation, sexual behavior, sleep, as well as dilation and constriction of the blood vessels among other things.

Low serotonin levels in the brain may lead to a process of constriction and dilation of the blood vessels which trigger a migraine. Triptans activate serotonin receptors to stop a migraine attack.

Neural theory

When certain nerves or an area in the brain stem become irritated, a migraine begins. In response to the irritation, the body releases chemicals which cause inflammation of the blood vessels.

These chemicals cause further irritation of the nerves and blood vessels and results in pain. Substance P is one of the substances released with first irritation. Pain then increases because substance P aids in sending pain signals to the brain.

Unifying theory

Both vascular and neural influences cause migraines.

  1. stress triggers changes in the brain
  2. these changes cause serotonin to be released
  3. blood vessels constrict and dilate
  4. chemicals including substance P irritate nerves and blood vessels causing pain

Magnesium is a dietary mineral that helps regulate blood vessel size, serotonin function, and nerve activity in the brain, among other functions.

Magnesium deficiency is thought to be at least one important factor in migraine attacks. Many studies suggest that magnesium might be a common denominator in both the vascular and the neural theories of migraine.

  • In support of the vascular theory, magnesium deficiency results in blood vessel constriction and adding magnesium to the diet leads to the opening (dilation) of blood vessels.
  • In support of the neural theory, magnesium deficiency has been linked with the production and release of substance P12-a biochemical that contributes to the inflammation of nerves and headache pain.

Recent studies indicate that having lower than normal levels of the mineral magnesium can influence serotonin and nitric oxide release, blood vessel size, and inflammation. It’s also thought that people with mitral valve prolaspe have lower than normal levels of magnesium.

Several studies have shown that magnesium depletion plays a critical role in blood vessel size. It seems not only to cause blood vessel constriction but to make blood vessels more sensitive to other chemicals that cause constriction and less sensitive to substances that cause blood vessels to dilate.

Studies have also shown that magnesium depletion seems to help release serotonin from its storage sites. It also helps make blood vessels in the brain more receptive to serotonin and thus clears the way for serotonin to cause constriction of blood vessels.

Replacing magnesium has been shown to have a very positive effect on migraine symptoms in some people.

So, it’s good to know the causes of your migraines (keep a migraine journal ! ), and find natural ways to deal with those issues.

Caffeine & Migraine Headaches: Cause or Treatment?

caffeine5 For those who suffer from migraines or headaches, especially frequent ones, it is important to understand just how caffeine can impact headache frequency and intensity. There is a great deal of debate among experts about the benefits and negative effects of caffeine and this can be confusing to sufferers.

How Does Caffeine Affect Your Body?

Caffeine has a range of effects on the body, one of which is the narrowing of blood vessels, which then restricts blood flow. Since blood vessels are thought to expand at the onset of migraines or headaches, it is thought that caffeine's vasoconstrictive property eases the pain. Caffeine is also believed to increase the effectiveness of many pain relievers, and is therefore added to various migraine and headache medications.

migrainetruthIt would then be logical to suggest that less pain reliever would be required to obtain the intended benefits of the medication.

Since some medications can cause gastrointestinal distress, a lower dose that is still effective would be particularly beneficial, and more so for chronic headache sufferers who require long-term medication use.

caffeinecheck Studies have suggested that over-the-counter medications may be as much as 40% more effective when caffeine is added. Generally, most individuals will find that they feel the effects of caffeine approximately half an hour after ingestion and these last for anywhere from three to five hours.

Caffeine can, however, also cause some unpleasant feelings such as restlessness, headaches, dizziness, shaking and insomnia.

In addition, caffeine stimulates the heart and raises metabolic rate. It is at higher doses that the unpleasant effects of caffeine are more likely to occur.

Caffeine Withdrawal
Withdrawal is commonly confused with addiction; it is rare for anyone to become addicted to caffeine, which involves a compulsive craving for the drug. Withdrawal, however, can occur from caffeine use and this involves physical symptoms that occur when caffeine use is halted or decreased. Generally, moderate consumption of caffeine is safe but since caffeine does slightly stimulate the nervous system, withdrawal effects can occur. Some of these include:
  • Nausea
  • Headache
  • Anxiety
  • Difficulty focusing
  • Agitation
  • Irritability
  • Non-specific muscle aches and pains

There is disagreement among experts regarding the exact amount of caffeine required to induce withdrawal symptoms. Your own personal tolerance can vary in comparison with someone else and age can also play a role, as metabolism of drugs changes as we age.

The average person can expect withdrawal symptoms to occur after consuming approximately 500mg of caffeine per day, which is equivalent to about five cups of coffee. Others may, however, still experience withdrawal from as little as 100mg of caffeine daily.

What is the Verdict?

Based on research to date, it would appear that mild to moderate doses of caffeine in medication are helpful in easing headache pain. If your medication doesn't contain caffeine, drinking coffee and consuming caffeine-containing foods or drinks in moderation shouldn't cause unpleasant symptoms or withdrawal effects.

If you are pregnant or on any other medications, your caffeine intake should be monitored more closely; and for everyone, it is wise to speak with your doctor if you have any doubts about how much caffeine you may safely consume as well as how caffeine consumption will affect your migraines and headaches.

The key to remember is that caffeine can be present in various foods such as chocolate, which is linked to migraines, so some caffeine rich foods may also have compounds that can exacerbate migraines.

For information on foods that affect migraine and headache pain, including other triggers and natural helpers, read more scientific research: Migraines Can Be a Thing of the Past: Why Migraines and Headaches Occur.

It's also important to monitor your daily intake of caffeine and to be aware of the differences in caffeine content between a cup of coffee brewed from one restaurant to another. Some 'coffee shops' will serve a cup of coffee that is double or triple the caffeine content of another one and you could be ingesting a lot more caffeine than you realize, resulting in headaches and uncomfortable shakes and stomach upset.

So a cup or two of coffee may help your headache but if you overdo it, you may be setting yourself up for more headaches than you started with.

New Orleans Fans Still Have Time to get their Tickets and a Road Map to SUPER BOWL XLIV

MIAMI AND SUPER BOWL XLIV IS
ONLY A CAR DRIVE AWAY !!!

superbowl 02.03.2010-Razorgator, the leader in Hard-To-Get  tickets for sports and entertainment events worldwide, helps New Orleans Saints fans find their way to Miami for Super Bowl Sunday.

For Super Bowl XLIV, many New Orleans Saints fans are choosing to make the 12-hour drive to Miami rather than hopping on a plane.

As the excitement builds and fans are getting ready for Sunday, there is still time to get last minute Super Bowl tickets before the game at Razorgator.com or on-site for guaranteed last minute orders, up until game time on Sunday.

“This is a very special moment for the New Orleans Saints and its fans”, said Brendan Ross, President &CEO at Razorgator.com. “We wanted to provide Saints fans with easy tips to help them navigate their way to Miami to take part in an unforgettable experience.”

Why fly when driving is so easy, you ask? Razorgator.com helps fans find their way to Miami:

1. It is only a 12-hour drive from New Orleans to Miami and the cost of fuel is only about $91. A flight will run about $800 non-stop according to Travelocity.com.

2. If you drive you can watch Burt Reynolds in The Longest Yard and swing by Palm Beach High School where he earned a football scholarship to Florida State.

3. You can listen to Carrie Underwood’s Cowboy Casanova in the car, a song that may or may not have been inspired by former beau Tony Romo. Carrie will beat her ex to the Super Bowl since she’ll be singing the National Anthem on Sunday.

4. Peyton Manning has thrown for over 50,000 yards in his career, which is about 1/30th of the way from his birthplace in New Orleans to Miami. You might not be able to break his passing records but you can bring a football in the car for the world?s longest game of catch on the drive to Miami.

5. Road trips always have better snacks than airplane food. Americans will consume almost 4,000 tons of popcorn, 15,000 tons of chips and 12 million pounds of avocado on Super Bowl Sunday. Flights do not even serve peanuts anymore.

6. Your car trunk does not charge you any baggage fees.

7. Swing by 7 Eleven on the way back. They sell 20% of their antacid for the year the day after the Super Bowl. At least Miami is 1 hour ahead of New Orleans, which gets you another hour of sleep when you get home!

Is God Inside The Brain Or Outside? (where IS God?)

GOD Barbara Bradley Hagerty, religious correspondent for NPR, recently wrote about a woman who had brain surgery. Besides being under anesthesia during the surgery, all the blood was drained from her brain in order to do the procedure.

When she was conscious again, she was able to describe the operating theatre, who was there, the surgical tools that were used and even the exact conversations between the staff.

All of this raises questions as to whether consciousness is inside the brain or is it somehow being transmitted to us. Are we similar to a radio receiver tuning in to the signals being sent to us?

Soothing Arthritis Pain

skookum My brother, Stan, and his wife, Heidi, were recently on a cruise to Alaska (lucky people). At one of the stops, as they were wandering around town they walked into a local shop and made a "wonderful find".

The shop is run by Harlena Warford, a native Tlinget medicine woman. She had an ointment to stop arthritis pain. Since they both have pain from arthritis, Harlena kindly allowed them to rub some of the ointment into the areas of their pain.

They left the store and continued to walk around town.

About 20 minutes later, they both realized that their pain was gone. They immediately walked back to the store and purchased some of the ointment.

I’ve personally purchased the ointment and have recommended it to several people. They have been reporting great results with it.

To find out about getting the ointment for yourself, go to http://linkbee.com/GutShuWu and get the Skookem Ointment. Harlena also says you can use it for fibromyalgia, neuropathy, lupus and other degenerative diseases.

Another product Harlena offers is Devils Club oil and ointment, which can be used for massaging sore muscles, psoriasis and eczema.

The Surprising Truth About Attitudes In The Workplace

A recently released large-scale study of workplace attitudes reveals that minority employees are just as engaged at work as their white colleagues. These results came from a study done by Sirota Survey Intelligence reviewing over 800,000 employee responses in 40 companies over the last five years.

Both white and minority managers had an 80% and 81% rating, respectively, on a favorable view of employee engagement at work. Regular employees rated themselves favorably with whites scoring 76% and minorities scoring 79%.

On fairness, African-American managers perceive that there is less fairness and development opportunities in their workplace with 61% rating the environment favorable versus 75% for whites. Hispanics reported at 74% and Asians at 68%.

Among regular employees the numbers were even lower, with only 59% of African-Americans rating the workplace favorable on fairness versus 66% for whites.

Finally, Hispanic managers and employees were the most engaged with a rating of 83% and 89%, respectively.

American Medical Association Backs Organic Foods

ama The AMA has chosen to adopt a policy supporting a sustainable food system. The AMA has recognized that our industrial food production methods are a significant contributor to increased antibiotic resistance, climate change, air and water pollution.

The AMA sees locally produced and organic foods as a way to reduce fuel use, decrease packaging and waste disposal while preserving farmland. All this leads to cleaner air and lowers the incidence of asthma attacks and other respiratory problems.

If the AMA agrees that organic is good, it’s got to be good!
